General Discussion / and nobody knows how
« on: November 08, 2018, 12:12:20 PM »
ANAHEIM Adam Lind will be lost to the Blue Jays for most of the second half of the season with a fracture in his right foot. Not only does the injury do further damage to the clubs hopes of a first playoff appearance in more than 20 years, it damages the franchises reputation because of how the injury was diagnosed. Lind volunteered the information after Wednesdays 8-7 loss to the Angels. "My mom wanted me to get an MRI, which we hadnt had yet because it wasnt getting any better," said Lind. "I asked for an MRI and it showed it." The fracture is the result of the ball Lind fouled off his foot on June 14 in Baltimore. At the time, he underwent a CT scan, which revealed a deep bruise. Lind said he was told he could not make the injury worse by playing. He pinch hit in games in New York (June 19) and Cincinnati (June 20, 21) before returning to the starting lineup as the designated hitter on June 23. At the time, he acknowledged his return to the starting lineup was expedited in the wake of injuries to Brett Lawrie (fractured right index finger) and Jose Bautista (hamstring). Since that time, Edwin Encarnacion has landed on the disabled list with a Grade-2 strain of his right quadriceps. Its not clear whether the initial CT scan missed the diagnosis or whether Lind was given bad information regarding the consequences of playing with the injury. The bottom line is Linds gone, taking his .320/.389/.489 (.369/.434/.570 versus right-handed pitchers) slash line with him. "Its not good," he said, in what qualifies as the understatement of the year. The Blue Jays, 1-6 through the Oakland and Anaheim portions of their 10-game, pre-All-Star Break road trip, have a day off on Thursday before settling in to Tampa Bay for three games with the Rays. A roster move will have to be made with Dan Johnson making the most sense. Johnson, 34, is a left-handed hitter whos best served as a designated hitter. He can occasionally play first base. He is a poor mans Lind, racking up more than three years of major league service time spread over eight seasons with four organizations. In 92 games with Triple-A Buffalo this year, Johnson is hitting .251/.405/.479 with 17 home runs and 19 doubles. He is best remembered for a home run he hit off Yankees reliever Cory Wade on the final day of the 2011 regular season. Johnsons Tampa Bay Rays overcame a 7-0 deficit as the Boston Red Sox, up in Baltimore, completed their fried chicken and beer-induced implosion that cost manager Terry Francona his job. The Rays would beat the Yankees in 12 innings on an Evan Longoria home run and enter the playoffs in improbable fashion. Without Lind, Encarnacion and Lawrie for the foreseeable future and with Bautista playing through continued pain in his hamstring, the Jays are beaten up as they get beaten on a near daily basis. Viso replaced the injured Canadian on Sunday in the opening practice for the Indianapolis 500 and its still unclear when the popular Hinchcliffe will turn his first laps on the famed 2.5-mile oval. Hinchcliffe, from Oakville, Ont., was injured Saturday in the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis when debris from Justin Wilsons car flew into the cockpit, striking Hinchcliffe in the head. He was taken away from the track on a stretcher, transported to a hospital and diagnosed with a concussion. He was hoping to be re-examined Sunday, but that never happened and now hes out until at least Tuesday. "Well have a better feeling then," team owner Michael Andretti said. "They just said rest and they dont want to see him again until Tuesday." Later, the team issued a statement saying that exam date has been scheduled. Traditionally, IndyCar drivers with concussions have missed a minimum of seven days off before being cleared to race. But series officials issued a statement Sunday night, saying concussions are handled on a case-by-case basis and that drivers with head injuries must pass an ImPACT test before theyre cleared to compete by series medical director Dr. Michael Olinger. If Olinger adheres to the strict timeline, though, Hinchcliffe would miss the only full week of Indy practice and might not be back in the No. 27 Honda until next weekend when the only two qualifying sessions will be held. Andretti brought in Viso, who hadnt even been in an IndyCar this season until completing 28 laps Sunday. Even Viso isnt sure what to expect next. He finished sixth on the speed charts with a fast lap of 222.105 mph. Twenty-four cars made it onto the track. Australias Will Power, who drives for Roger Penske, was the fastest of the 24 cars at 223.057 mph. Viso said he is pprepared to do whatever Andrettis team needs -- even if that means replacing Hinchcliffe for qualifying or in the May 25 race.dddddddddddd "Its too early to know. It just happened yesterday and nobody knows how hes going to recover. It 100 per cent comes down to his recovery," the Venezuelan said. "First of all, I just wish James a quick recovery. If he takes a little bit longer and Im able to drive and do the job for him Im, of course, not disappointed with that. But for me, the most important thing is to understand that hes recovering fast." He has made six straight starts in the 500, including a career best fourth last year. Viso finished 18th in 2013, matching his best career finish at Indy. The team said Hinchcliffe did make a brief appearance at the track to meet with his crew and have lunch with his family. He also spoke briefly with Viso but did not take questions from reporters. For the popular Canadian driver, its already been a challenging season. He started second at Long Beach and Barber but has not finished higher than seventh in any of this seasons four races. He qualified 11th for Saturdays race, then wound up 20th after leaving with the head injury. In Hinchcliffes three previous IndyCar seasons, hes had 14 top-five finishes in 50 starts and won three races -- with all three coming last season. What everyone wants to know now is whether hell get a chance at a third straight top-nine qualifying run at Indianapolis? "He seems in good shape and hes going to recover fast," Viso said. Andretti Autosport has five cars, including NASCARs Kurt Busch, trying to qualify for the May 25 race. Ryan Hunter-Reay had the fastest car of the bunch, turning a lap of 222.134 on Sunday. Busch, who is trying to become the fourth driver to race 1,100 miles in one day, at Indianapolis and Charlotte, was 12th at 220.352. General Discussion / t more comfortable with the Minnesota
« on: November 08, 2018, 12:10:15 PM »
One rumour circulating around the NFL after the Draft this past weekend was that the Cleveland Browns originally intended to draft Teddy Bridgewater 22nd overall, but changed the name on the card to Johnny Manziel at the last second. Whether its true or not, and the Browns are denying it, its a good thing Cleveland went with the former Heisman Trophy winner over Bridgewater, or they could have been dealing with an unhappy rookie QB. In a radio interview with "The Dan Patrick Show", Bridgewater said he didnt want to be drafted by the Browns, and that he had always felt more comfortable with the Minnesota Vikings, who selected him 10 picks later at No. 32. "There was a chance (getting drafted by the Browns), but I actually told my agent thats not the place where I wanted to be, Bridgewater told "The Dan Patrick Show". "Throughout this entire process I felt comfortable with the Minnesota Vikings." Soccer Jerseys From China . His Chicago Blackhawks teammates werent shocked when he found it. If they lose, Germany will get the last quarter-final berth.SILVERSTONE, England -- Lewis Hamilton won a crash-hit British Grand Prix on Sunday to cut Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosbergs lead in the drivers championship from 29 points to just four after the German had his first non-finish of the season. Hamilton, the 2008 champion, started sixth on the grid. The British driver leapt to fourth on the opening lap before it was red-flagged, and suspended for an hour, following a crash involving 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari and Felipe Massa of Williams. Hamilton then took the lead after 29 laps as Rosberg retired with gearbox failure. Hamilton came home 30 seconds clear of Finn Valtteri Bottas of Williams, who started 14th. Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull finished third ahead of Jenson Button, the 2009 champion, of McLaren and defending four-time champion Sebastian Vettel in the second Red Bull. Two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was sixth. It was Hamiltons fifth win this year, his second in his home event and the 27th of his career, drawing him level with fellow-Briton and three-time champion Jackie Stewart in the record books. "England! What a great feeling guys, I couldnt be happier, Im sorry about yesterday, but a fantastic job today, as ever!" a delighted Hamilton told his team by radio. Hamilton made a mistake in qualifying on Saturdaay after wrongly deciding the track was too damp, or wet, for him to improve his best lap time.dddddddddddd From the winners podium, Hamilton added: "This shows you never give up! Right now, its very mixed emotions at the moment, but we have the greatest fans here. It was you guys who spurred me on. At the beginning, I allowed him (Rosberg) to get a good gap and look after the tires. "But we came out on the harder tire and could not believe I had that kind of pace. I dont want to see a team-mate fail, I want a one-two, but I really needed this result." Raikkonen was involved in a spectacular high-speed opening lap accident that halted the race for an hour to allow repairs to the barriers. The Ferrari driver lost control, spun, hit the barriers and collided with the Williams of Brazilian Massa, who was starting his 200th Grand Prix. Both escaped serious injury but Raikkonen, whose car was massively damaged, limped away and required later X-rays on his right ankle. Massa was forced out with a damaged car, but like Rosberg, stayed to cheer the teams at the end of the race. Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen finished seventh for McLaren ahead of German Nico Hulkenberg of Force India, Russian rookie Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso and 10th-placed Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne in the second Toro Rosso. The annual friendly between Western Canadas Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Canadian Interuniversity Sport side UVic Vikes is set for Sunday, February 16 at Centennial Stadium at 2pm pt. The 2014 edition will be the ninth meeting between the Caps and Vikes in a tradition that dates back to 2005. "Since the original Whitecaps, the club has enjoyed fantastic support from fans in Victoria and all across Vancouver Island," said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. "The annual match against the UVic Vikes is always a highlight of our preseason and an important tradition." The preseason friendly on Vancouver Island will be Whitecaps FCs lone match in British Columbia before the club kicks off their 40th anniversary and fourth season in MLS on Saturday, March 8 at BC Place against reigning MLS Supporters Shield winners New York Red Bulls. The Caps fourth of seven preseason matches will take place between trips to Casa Grande, Arizona, and Portland, Oregon, and Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson will look to use a full complement of players including a number of First Kick starters. "Its important for us to visit our fans on the island and give them the opportunity to see our first team players," added Robinson. "This match will give us that chance, provided each player is fit to play." Last year, Whitecaps FC defeated the Vikes 3-0 in front of 2,600 fans at Centennial Stadium. Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams filled the stat sheet against the short-handed New Orleans Pelicans and the Sixers led wire-to-wire in a 96-81 win Friday night, the most lopsided of their eight victories this season. The Sixers took care of the ball, going nearly two quarters without turning it over during one stretch. Their 19-point lead in the fourth quarter was a season-best. Noel had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks and Carter-Williams scored 22 with seven assists and six rebounds, but neither had to contend with two of the Pelicans best players. New Orleans big man Anthony Davis sat with a sprained left toe he suffered in Wednesdays win over Detroit and point guard Jrue Holiday, the former Sixer, missed a second game with right ankle inflammation. Robert Covington scored 18 points and Luc Mbah a Moute had 13 for the Sixers, who entered the game on a two-game skid after falling to Eastern Conference division leaders Atlanta and Toronto. Those losses came on the heels of a 3-1 stretch that included their first two home wins of the season. They are 3-16 at Wells Fargo Center. Alexis Ajinca led New Orleans with a season-high 16 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Eric Gordon added 16 points and Jimmer Fredette scored 13 for the Pelicans, who havent won consecutive games since Dec. 16 and 18. New Orleans coach Monty Williams said Davis toe grew sore near the end of the Detroit game and didnt respond to treatment as well as the team would havee liked.ddddddddddddHe said Davis and Holiday felt better, but werent where they needed to be to play. Williams pointed out that his five starters combined for 10 assists and 14 turnovers. We didnt play team basketball with that starting group, he said. All the things we talk about that we dont want to do, we did tonight: turn the ball over, didnt play together, got outworked. Simple as that. Ryan Anderson started for Davis at power forward and had eight points on 2- of-11 shooting and Tyreke Evans also scored eight filling in for Holiday again. The Sixers went more than 21 1/2 minutes without a turnover between the first and third quarters. They stretched a 50-47 halftime lead to 17 in the third quarter and 19 on three occasions in the fourth, the last when Noels hook shot made it 90-71. Earlier, they made 10 of their first 13 field goal attempts and had a 22-6 lead after scoring 11 straight points. The Sixers signed guard Larry Drew II to a 10-day contract before the game, calling him up from Sioux Falls of the NBA Development League. He scored five points in his NBA debut. Game Notes The Sixers snapped a three-game losing streak against the Pelicans, who had averaged 122.3 points in the previous three meetings in the series ... The Sixers scored 33 points in the first quarter, a season-high for that quarter ... The Pelicans are 1-2 on a five-game road trip. They visit Toronto on Sunday ... SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Austin Oh drove in two runs to cap a six-run third inning in leading Sammamish, Wash., to a 6-5 win over Nashville, Tenn., in a Little League World Series elimination game Tuesday night. Jack Carper, Dalton Chandler and Will Armbruester each had RBI singles during the rally that put Sammamish ahead 6-2. The Washington team had six of its eight hits in the third inning. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Maple Leafs have trade offers on the table for the 26-year-old, but none have been deemed acceptable by the team.TORONTO - In a play that sort of typified the evening and maybe even their season, Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry led a second-quarter fast break by delivering a one-handed bounce pass to Greivis Vasquez, who lateraled to the trailing Amir Johnson. Johnson, the beneficiary of a couple perfectly placed passes, capped off the sequence with a tomahawk slam that put Toronto on top by 20 points. Fouled on the landing, Johnsons momentum carried him into the first row, where he proudly pointed to the team name on his jersey and slapped hands with fans seated on the baseline. It was that kind of night. The proceedings began with the unveiling of a second Atlantic Division Championship banner and concluded with a well-deserved standing ovation just over two hours later. The Raptors - trotting off the court following a 110-100, wire-to-wire win over the Bucks - had set a new franchise record with their 48th victory of the season, while also going 15 games above the .500 mark for the first time in team history. "Its definitely great because we fed off our fans," said DeMar DeRozan, who stood centre court and counted down from three, as the banner was uncovered from the rafters atop Air Canada Centre, hanging adjacent to the one they had earned in 2006-07. The final home game of the season - Fanapolooza, as its been dubbed - had been a somber event for five years running. It was an opportunity for the Raptors loyal, albeit frustrated supporters to come bid farewell to a team that had let them down, a chance to vent their disappointment but mostly to guzzle up free t-shirts, pizza and whatever swag the remorseful organization was offering up. Most importantly, it meant the end of basketball in Toronto for another long summer. Not the case on Monday. Monday night was a celebration, a show of appreciation from a starved fan base to a team that has captured their admiration with resilience and hard play. It was a night of reflection, looking back at where they came from and rejoicing in what theyve accomplished. It wasnt a goodbye. Theyll see them again in five or six days. "Weve got to have some of the most devoted fans in the league," he continued. "Ive been here through the struggles and tough times and our fans were still right there with us on this journey. So it definitely felt good to share it with them because they played a major part in it as well." Although DeRozan was in uniform, available to play if it would have come to that, he was given the night off to rest going into his playoff debut next weekend. As it turns out, they didnt need him, not against the league-worst Bucks on Monday night. It was the 11th time theyve played without a member of their first unit - a group that has won more games than any starting five in franchise history - and the 11th time theyve come away victorious. With the Raptors all-star guard cheerleading from the sidelines, Greivis Vasquez started in his stead, pacing the team with 25 points and seven assists. "It was a fun win," said Vasquez, who knocked down his first six shots, five of them from beyond the arc. "They gave me a chance to start, I just went out there and did my job." Performances like his, like Tyler Hansbroughs double-double in 20 minutes, are a big part of whats gotten them to this point.dddddddddddd DeRozan has carried this team more often than not, so too has Lowry - who scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half - but when one or both have needed it, someone has generally been waiting and ready to back them up. "All it takes is the right chemistry, the right group of guys and you can do whatever it takes," DeRozan said. "You dont need no big name players, you dont need this, that and the third, what people supposedly say you need. Were proof of that and we continue to keep growing, keep learning and keep building. On to the next step." The next step, as the Raptors leading scorer puts it, is Wednesdays regular season finale in New York. With a win over the Knicks, Toronto would lock down the Eastern Conferences third seed and face whomever slots into sixth, most likely Washington. The Raptors would fall to fourth and play the fifth place team - likely Brooklyn - if they should lose on Wednesday and the Bulls defeat the Bobcats in Charlotte. "Im more worried about us, more so than who we play," said Casey. "Its about us, about our health, the rest, whatever we decide to do in that situation. If we play Brooklyn we play Brooklyn. If we play Washington we play Washington. There are no easy teams left in the playoffs right now. All of the teams are very capable. Brooklyn is probably more playoff-ready. But we cant control that. And Im not going into [Wednesdays] game trying to control that." The Raptors coach said he has not decided whether DeRozan - second in the NBA in minutes logged this year - will play in Wednesdays season finale. Home sweet home The Raptors will finish the season with 26 wins at home for the fourth time in franchise history. After dropping eight of their first 12 games at the ACC, they have become one of the toughest teams to beat on home court, winning 22 of 29 since the end of December. "Coach definitely stressed to us, weve got to protect home court," DeRozan said of the turnaround. "Thats big. We cant let teams come in here and think they can get wins. We really started taking it personally, understanding weve got to use our crowd to our advantage. Everybody bought in, so every time we were home we felt comfortable and felt that we could get any win." "I think our guys have gotten better, matured, improved, I think more than anything else," Dwane Casey said of their success at home. "You should have the same approach whether youre on the road, playing on the moon, wherever youre playing youve got to have the same approach and our guys have done a good job of that, whether were on the road or at home." They were undefeated, 19-0 in games they led going into the fourth quarter in Toronto, something that should serve them well as they go into the first round of the playoffs with home-court advantage. The stat With their fourth straight win over Milwaukee, the Raptors swept the season series with the Bucks for the first time in team existence. The quote "We had group at the start of the season that was motivated, dedicated to winning," said Lowry, "and when everything didnt pan out we made a move and we got a group of guys who came in that really filled the voids that we needed. After beating one of the best teams in the league the last time out, the surprising Calgary Flames shoot for a third consecutive victory Friday when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. The Flames have built a 3-1-0 mark so far on a six-game road trip and are coming off consecutive wins over Nashville and Chicago. Calgary downed the Predators 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday and the next night earned a 2-1 overtime victory against the Blackhawks. Chicago, of course, won its second Stanley Cup title in four years in 2013 and made it to the Western Conference finals last spring. The Flames scored first on Wednesday, as Dennis Wideman scored at the 11:55 mark of the second period to stake Calgary to a lead. Chicagos Andrew Shaw would score a power-play goal with 5:45 left in regulation to even the score at 1-1. It appeared the game was headed to a shootout until Mikael Backlund ended the game in Calgarys favor shortly before the OT period was set to end. Backlund received the puck from T.J. Brodie in the neutral zone and skated into the Blackhawks end. Using defenseman Brent Seabrook as a screen, the Calgary center fired a shot under Corey Crawfords glove with 25 seconds remaining in the extra session. Although Backlund came up with the winning goal, Flames goaltender Jonas Hiller was correctly identified as the games First Star. Hiller stopped 49 shots to anchor Calgarys victory in a game where they were outshot by a 50-18 margin. I was happy that it didnt have to go to a shootout, said Hiller. Its always nice to get it done in overtime. The Flames, who were 16-21-4 as the away club last season, will complete their current road trip Sunday in Winnipeg. The Blue Jackets, meanwhile, hope to close out a three-game homestand with a winning record. Columbus beat the New York Rangers to open the residency on Saturday and improve to 2-0 on the season before dropping a 4-2 decision in Tuesdays meeting with Dallas. Stars forward Tyler Seguin recorded a hat trick to help down the Blue Jackets. Seguin snapped a 2-2 tie by scoring with 7:44 left in the third period and then sealed the victory with an empty-net tally. Ryan Johansen had a pair of goals for the Blue Jackets, while Sergei Bobrovsky allowed three goals on 34 shots in the loss. I thought we were doing some good things in the first period, and got back into the game in the second, said Johansen. We just came out flat in the third and they took it to us. Johansen, who missed all of training camp due to a contract dispute, is leading the Blue Jackets with five points on two goals and three assists. Bobrovsky is expected to start tonight and he holds a 2-1-2 record and a 2.34 goals against average in five career outings against Calgary. Karri Ramo could get the call in net for the Flames and has never faced the Blue Jackets. Columbus will head out on a four-game road trip after ending its homestand tonight. The Blue Jackets will begin the swing Saturday in Ottawa before heading to the West Coast for matchups with San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles. The Blue Jackets and Flames split a pair of meetings in 2013-14 with each club picking up a win on the road. Many coaches differ in how they go about teaching but lets talk about some things that are done when installing a concept.   Lets talk about the install of a pass concept. First you would hand out a sheet diagramming the play usually drawn up on a computer program with any descriptions written in. This would usually be drawn on a football field and would show where the receivers align in relationship to the landmarks on the football field - hashes, sidelines. The coach sometimes will then draw the play on a dry erase board or smart board versus the three top coverages you are expecting, talk about the releases and adjustments against various coverages if they are any. Some teams change routes on the fly based on coverage looks. A video would then be shown of this concept if it has previously been run so the players can see it being executed in a game situation. Also, the coach would put up defences the opponent has shown that would help the players visualize the success of the concept.   When you get on the practice field you will usually walk through the concept and the alignment on the field, and a little later the play will be practised full speed with the quarterbacks and receivers to get the exact timing and drop mechanics down for the QB.dddddddddddd The play will then be practised against the defense allowing the receivers and quarterback to work against other players who are reacting to them and the football. Sometimes this play will also be run in a team session with all twelve players to make sure the protection is timed up and worked on.    After practice the coaches will then review the film and analyze the execution of the pass concept and take notes for their players about the play. The following day in meetings the players will be able to see all the repetitions of that pass concept and see video of themselves practising it.    As you can see that when you have many players, you always have to cover your bases on how you teach them. So people have to see it in a classroom others need a walk through to understand and some players have to rep things many times. I have coached a few players that can execute with little or no practice.    Repetition is, I believe, a key for being able to do things well. As you can see, coaches go to great lengths to install the plays you see on the field on gameday. General Discussion / Rubio on the floor
« on: November 08, 2018, 11:57:16 AM »
MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Love has always been able to pile up the points and the rebounds at a rate that few in the NBA can match. Now that hes hitting streaking teammates with pin-point passes for easy layups, Love is asserting himself as one of the true superstars in the league. Love had 32 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 116-108 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Six of Loves assists came in a sensational first quarter, and he connected with Corey Brewer on three length-of-the-court outlets to get the Timberwolves offence rolling. "The guy can throw a chest pass 100 yards," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "He should be an NFL quarterback and he can throw chest passes to the receivers." Kevin Martin added 32 points and five rebounds and Corey Brewer scored 17 points to help the Timberwolves snap a two-game skid. "Eight assists, I think, was great," Love said. "Guys were just cutting and I was leading them, whether it was in the half court or hitting them on the fast break." Jose Calderon made 6 of 8 3-pointers and scored 21 points for the Mavericks. Monta Ellis scored 23 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 14 for Dallas. The Mavericks played without trusted reserve Vince Carter, who was suspended for the game for elbowing Oklahoma Citys Steven Adams on Wednesday. The Wolves led by 11 in the third and eight with less than 4:30 to play, and had to hold their breath down the stretch. Calderon hit his sixth 3 of the night and Ellis scored on a drive to the bucket to make it 105-102 Minnesota with 2:24 to go. Love, who just missed his first triple-double of his career, hit a 3 on the other end, Ricky Rubio foiled Elliss drive to the basket and Love sealed it with a 17-foot Nowitzki-style fade-away on the baseline with 1:13 to play. "Thats why he gets paid the big bucks," coach Rick Adelman said. Nikola Pekovic had 15 points and six rebounds for Minnesota. Jae Crowder had 10 points and six rebounds for Dallas. The new-look Mavericks have been one of the best offensive teams in the league, with Ellis and Calderon making a seamless transition and flourishing as role players surrounding Nowitzki. Ellis has been remarkably efficient in comparison to his volume shooting ways with the Warriors and Bucks, entering the game shooting 55 per cent on 2-pointers. That efficiency wasnt there on Friday night as Ellis needed 24 shots to score 23 points. "We couldnt get a stop," Calderon said. "But it wasnt just the last three or four minutes, it was kind of the full fourth quarter we were just trading baskets with them. We couldnt get two in a row or three in a row." The Wolves appeared to be taking control midway through the third quarter with a 16-4 surge that put them in front by 11. But the Mavericks came right back, getting two 3s from Calderon and another from Ellis during a 13-3 run that cut the deficit to one point. For much of the game, Love was the Timberwolves best passer, even with Rubio on the floor. He hit Brewer for several home run passes and racked up six assists in an outstanding first quarter. He also had nine points and six rebounds in the period. Rubio had six points on 2-for-8 shooting and four assists and he was bottled up for most of the night by Spanish countrymen Calderon, who didnt fall for the sleight of hand that Rubio uses to keep defenders off balance. Calderon also had seven assists and four rebounds. "Things didnt go our way tonight," Crowder said. "I dont think it was too much what they were doing. We knew exactly what they were going to do. Of course their offence was rolling tonight, and we didnt get stops when we need to." NOTES: Carter said at shootaround that he wished he could take the elbow to Adams back, but couldnt and felt bad for putting his team in the position of not having him available for the game. ... Timberwolves F Derrick Williams did not play because of back spasms. ... Robbie Hummel made his NBA debut for the Timberwolves, scoring two points in 11 minutes. China Jerseys Free Shipping . The 19-year-old from Westmount, Que., was edged 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 by third-seeded Alize Cornet of France. For Sweed, a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, this will be his second go around in the CFL after previously having spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Shane Lowry birdied his closing two holes for a 2-under 70 Friday to join Thomas Bjorn in the lead after the second round of the BMW PGA Championship. Lowry overcame a double bogey on the ninth hole by making four birdies on his back nine to erase a two-shot deficit to Bjorn, who carded a 72 on a day of intermittent rain showers. The duo was four shots clear of the field with 10-under totals of 134. Spains Rafa Cabrera-Bello (73) and former BMW PGA winner Luke Donald (67) were tied for third. Rory McIlroy was another shot back along with Swedish duo Jonas Blixt and Henrik Stenson after all three carded 71. The 27-year old Lowry won the 2009 Irish Open in a playoff as an amateur, and then added the 2012 Portugal Masters title after turning professional. This, though, would be by far the biggest win of his career. "I just have to go out and keep doing what I have been doing," the 142nd-ranked Irishman said. "Ive got my coach with me this week, so hes quite good at getting me ready to play no matter what situation Im in. And it will be good to go out with Thomas tomorrow and see how I get on." Bjorn led by two shots after the first round of the European Tours flagship event, but found that advantage gone with bogeys at the first and sevennth holes.dddddddddddd But Bjorn birdied his 15th and final holes minutes before Lowry birdied 17 and the last to finish tied for the lead with the Dane. "Well go out and work hard on the weekend and see what the conditions are like and try and play the golf course and not the opponents," Bjorn said. "Theres two very hard days ahead of us, so we know what this championship is all about. " Defending champion Matteo Manassero missed the cut after following up an 80 with a 71. McIlroy fought back from double bogey on the seventh hole, which he eagled the day before, to stay in contention. McIlroy finished much better than he started, as he eagled the par-five 12th for a second straight day, and birdied three of his last four holes. "The way the conditions were this morning, being 3-over par after seven wasnt all that bad, and it wasnt disastrous," he said. Blixt, the Masters runner-up, is eyeing his maiden European Tour victory. "My golf hasnt been too great but I kind of saved myself a couple of times, hitting some really good shots," Blixt said. "I dont think now with the rain settling in that anyone is going to run away with it. "But I cant remember the last time I played wearing so much clothing. It became really cold out there." General Discussion / in each of Detroits first

CHICAGO -- The Detroit Tigers will have to wait at least another day to try to snap out of their recent funk. The second game of the Tigers scheduled four-game series at the Chicago White Sox was postponed Tuesday night. The tarp stayed on the field all day as intermittent rain fell in the Chicago area. With more wet weather in the forecast for the rest of the night, the game was called about 2 hours before the scheduled start. There was no immediate announcement of a makeup date for the first postponed White Sox home game of the season. Detroit returns to Chicago for a three-game series from Aug. 29-31. The White Sox used the rainout to skip Andre Rienzos turn in the rotation. Left-hander John Danks was moved back a day to Wednesday, and Chris Sale will pitch in the series finale on Thursday. Rienzo, who has dropped each of his last three starts, will pitch Sunday against Kansas City. Detroit adjusted its rotation. Drew Smyly, who was slated to start Wednesdays game, was pushed out of the series altogether. Justin Verlander was moved back to Wednesday and Max Scherzer will face Sale on Thursday in a matchup of two of the best pitchers in the AL. The Tigers dropped to 4-3 against the White Sox this season with a 6-5 loss in the series opener Monday night. Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Eugenio Suarez homered, but Rick Porcello struggled through five-plus innings. AL Central-leading Detroit got off to a 27-12 start this season, but it has struggled of late. The Tigers, who won the division in each of the previous three seasons, have lost seven of nine and 15 of 21 overall. Before the game was called, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus had Cabrera at designated hitter and Victor Martinez at first base for the second straight night. Cabrera left Sunday nights 5-3 loss to Boston with left hamstring tightness, but went 2 for 4 in Monday nights loss. "He said hes feeling better today," Ausmus said. "Its going to be wet out there. I dont know if he would have played the field anyway, but the fact that its going to be raining on and off makes the decision easier to DH him." Cabrera is 8 for 14 with a homer and two RBIs in his last four games. The AL MVP the last two seasons is batting .329 with 12 homers and 52 RBIs in 2014, playing in each of Detroits first 60 games. "Its tough to get him out of the lineup because hes the best hitter in the game," Ausmus said. While the Tigers have been sliding, they have received a boost from Suarez. The 22-year-old rookie shortstop is 4 for 11 with two homers in four major league games since he was recalled from Triple-A Toledo last Wednesday. "It should give him confidence. He looks good with the bat. Hes swinging the bat well," Ausmus said. "The truth is that in baseball three weeks from now, if youre not swinging the bat well, your confidence is gone. You have to re-find. That happens to everybody at some point, without fail. I hope he goes through without ever struggling a day in his life. But chances are thats never going to happen." Despite a sore ankle hindering her practice, the 19-year-old Murakami hit a triple toe-triple toe combination, triple lutz and triple flip-double toe for her first gold at an international championship event. Ahead of her first Winter Olympics next month, Murakami earned a segment score of 132.18 and overall total of 196.91. "I was anxious the whole time because of my leg," Murakami said. "But I was able to relax when my performance starrted.dddddddddddd." Making her Four Continents debut, the 15-year-old Miyahara produced a stellar performance which included a triple lutz-triple toe and double axel-double toe combinations for 126.26 in the free skate and a total of 186.53. MILWAUKEE - Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun has undergone a medical procedure to address a nerve problem near his right thumb.Milwaukee said Thursday that Dr. Vernon Williams of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles administered cryotherapy, a procedure involving the application of extreme cold.Braun is to meet with Williams again Monday; if Braun responds well to the treatment, he will begin swinging a bat to determine the procedures effect on his swing and pain tolerance.Braun hit .266 with 19 homers and 81 RBIs this year. The Big Man finished 3-1 in Week 15, and sits at 39-22 on the season. Now Schultz is ready for more action. Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts The Argonauts are 5-8 and the Ticats are 6-7. They did play earlier this season on Labour Day and the Ticats won that one 13-12 in a game where neither team played exceptional football. Between the two, this is a bit of a must-win for the Argos because if they lose they lose the season series with only one more game between the two, again in Toronto, on October 25. Both teams are playing their best right now. Even though the Argos defense shut down John White of Edmonton, I think Hamilton is progressing faster toward excellence. Between the two, Hamilton has allowed 68 fewer points. On offence I like Toronto. They have scored 60 more points than Hamilton and the Steele/Slaton rotation at running back is working. In the return game in the battle of hidden yardage between Brandon Banks and Chad Owens I will give a slight advantage to Owens as he can break tackles better than Banks who relies on elusiveness alone. Interesting how the season has evolved as both teams are so similar in many ways that anticipatory logic says it will be a field goal game. Even the kickers, Justin Medlock for Hamilton and Swayze Waters for Toronto are equal in ability. So, Toronto by 3. Ottawa Redblack at BC Lions Great win for Ottawa over Winnipeg 42-20 last Friday night. Tough, very tough loss for BC by two in Hamilton, making it 3 in a row: Toronto, Calgary and then Hamilton. Urgency is on the side of BC as at 7-7 they are two games behind the Roughriders and Eskimos and five games behind first place Calgary. And Winnipeg is only one game behind BC for that final playoff, possible crossover spot. The Lions need Tim Brown and Stefan Logan back this week. Both have that unique level of explosiveness athletically that can change games. How to fit them in the ratio is the problem and if they can it could make a difference. I will be looking forward to watching Johnathan Williams again for Ottawa. If he can have a dominant running game for a second week in a row that will go a long way to an upset win for the Redblacks. Or maybe upset win is the wrong term.ddddddddddddBack on September 5th BC beat 0ttawa but only 7-5. It was a close game where Travis Lulay re-injured his shoulder and there was a lighting delay. Urgency over satisfaction, BC over Ottawa. Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes Strength for Montreal is coming off the bye week here in October. After the Roughriders, every game the Alouettes have is in the East with Toronto twice, and Hamilton and Ottawa once. In October all you can ask for is to control your own destiny and even at 5-8, if the As win all five it would be a 10-8 season and maybe good for first in the East. Jonathan Crompton may have yet to throw for 300 yards in his five starts but he is 4-1 and that has a much higher level of significance than a 300-yard game. With the Riders, Tino Sunseri coming off the bench has done a good job but that also means Montreal has video of him being his best. James Rogers for Montreal is quietly making a major contribution similar to Brandon Banks in Hamilton or Jock Sanders in Calgary. This game is a matchup of the power running of Saskatchewan against the deep ball receivers of Montreal: Duron Carter and SJ Green. In this one, deep ball wins. Im going with Montreal. Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Eskimos The first time these two teams played was July 17 and Edmonton was dominant and won 26-3. This could be a repeat. Coming off a loss in Toronto by one point in a game where Edmonton took 18 penalties for 224 yards you know they wont be repeating that. And coming off a game where John White was shut down, that is unlikely to repeat as well. The saving grace for the 2014 season in Winnipeg is that no matter how it finishes, with four wins, four losses, or somewhere in between, they have found a quarterback that can be more than just good. Drew Willy has been the nice surprise of the season and will only get better. Not sure about everyone else as the season goes into the fourth quarter. Edmonton will respond after Toronto and Winnipeg had to respond if the Eskimos score first. Not sure they can do it. Fred Stamps is finding his groove, Adarius Bowman has already found his. Winnipeg will need Edmonton to self-destruct like they did in Toronto, not going to happen. Im taking Edmonton. Two Vancouver newspapers have apologized to Canucks prospect Jordan Subban, after a photo was published to their websites describing him as the dark guy in the middle. Both The Vancouver Sun and The Province used the same caption to accompany a photo of Subban taken Tuesday from a pre-season matchup between the Canucks and the San Jose Sharks in Vancouver. In the photo, Subban is surrounded by several of his teammates. A caption accompanying the photo read, Vancouver Canucks celebrate goal by Jordan Subban (dark guy in the middle) against San Jose Sharks in NHL pre season game at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C., on September 23, 2014. Earlier in the day, Vancouver Sun digital deputy editor Gillian Burnett also explained on Twitter that the caption was written by a photographer and should not have been written or published. EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oil Kings refuse to be written off. Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for his third shutout of the playoffs as the Oil Kings won their second straight game at home to even up the Western Hockey League final, coming away with a 2-0 victory over the defending champion Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday. Mitchell Moroz and Curtis Lazar scored the goals for the Oil Kings, who have looked a lot slicker at home as they improved to 10-0 on home ice and tied the Ed Chynoweth Cup at two heading back to Portland, Ore., for Game 5 on Friday. "At the end of the day, we know we are the underdogs in this series," said Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal. "However, we are tied 2-2 in the series going back to Portland. We are going to have to win one game in that building and our mindset is why not Friday night? "We want to make a series of this. We want a chance to win the Western Hockey League championship. These kids have worked hard to get it to 2-2. Some people wrote us off when we were down 2-0, but you have to give our guys credit. We came out tonight with probably our best effort in the playoffs thanks to (Tristan Jarrys) goaltending and the leadership of guys like (Griffin Reinhart)." It was the first game of the series that the Oil Kings werent trailing within the first three minutes and Moroz said it was nice not to have to dig themselves out of a hole for once. "We came out the way we wanted to in this game," he said. "We had some chances early and didnt capitalize, but we kept working away at it. We didnt give up the first period goals this time, which was nice, not having to battle back like we did in the other games. "We just played our game. We stuck with it and were patient." The Winterhawks have lost two in a row after allowing only three losses in their previous 45 games, a string of success dating back to Jan. 11. "We didnt get the start that we wanted tonight," said Portland forward Adam De Champlain. "We came out a bit flat. Having to kill seven penalties hurt us and it really allowed them to feed off their fans. When we had the momentum we had trouble sticking it. We didnt have the energy we needed on the bench." It was the first time since December 2011 that the Winterhawks, who led the league with 338 goals this season, have been shut out. "Its playoff hockey, everyone understands the goals are harder to come by," said Winterhawks head coach Mike Johnston. "There are going to be moments like this. It is just a bit of adversity for us to handle right now.dddddddddddd We just need to get through it. "We just have to regroup. It is a best two-out-of-three series now." The Oil Kings had a much better start to the game than the previous three outings as they avoided allowing a goal against in the first three minutes of the matchup. Edmonton actually had the bulk of the scoring chances in the first until the Hawks came back late. The Oil Kings had 14 shots in the scoreless first on Portland goalie Corbin Boes, while the Winterhawks responded with 13 on Jarry, a second-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013. Edmonton finally broke the scoring deadlock nine minutes into the second period. After sustained pressure on the shift, a Dysin Mayo shot caromed off the boards and rolled off the top of the net to Moroz in front where the Edmonton Oilers draft pick slammed his fifth goal of the playoffs past Boes. Jarry prevented Portland from tying the game up two minutes later as Oliver Bjorkstrand picked the pocket of Reid Petryk at the Edmonton blue-line, but couldnt beat the Oil Kings goalie on the partial breakaway. The edge in shots had increased to 28-18 for Edmonton by the end of the second period. The Oil Kings made it 2-0 six minutes into the third as Brett Pollock threw a hard pass on net on a two-on-one and Lazar was able to tip the puck through Boes legs. It hit the post, but then went in off of the Portland goalies skates to count as the Ottawa Senators prospects eighth goal of the playoffs. Edmonton kept driving and it was only the heroics of Boes that kept the game close midway through the third as he stopped breakaways by Petryk and Lazar in a span of just over a minute midway through the third. The Oil Kings thought they put the game away for good with an empty-net goal by Pollock, however the play was ruled off-side. Notes: The Winterhawks managed to score in the first three minutes of each of the first three games of the series, holding an edge of 7-0 in first-period goals in the series coming into Wednesdays game. ... Its the third consecutive season that the Oil Kings and Winterhawks are meeting in the WHL final. Edmonton defeated Portland in seven games to win in 2012, while Portland won in six games last year. MONTREAL - The Raptors have made their eight-game exhibition slate look easy, for whatever thats worth. With Fridays 83-80 win over the Knicks in Montreal, Toronto closed out the pre-season with a record of 7-1, matching the franchise record for most exhibition victories and ensuring theyll finish camp with the leagues best record this fall. What does it all mean? Nothing, Dwane Casey said following his teams pre-season finale at the Bell Centre. Not one hill of beans. Exhibition, you can take this record and - I cant say what I want to say. But you can do whatever you want with the [stat sheet], because exhibition doesnt mean anything except for our conditioning and our timing and our rhythm that it gave us. Indeed, exhibition success is difficult to measure and theres no telling how it may translate to the real games. The last and only other time the Raptors have tallied seven pre-season wins was in 2006, just ahead of one of the franchises best campaigns which ultimately resulted in a division title. Last year they went 6-1 - their last game was canceled on account of a slippery court in Milwaukee - before starting the season 6-12. The lesson here: youre not likely to find much correlation between fall results and regular season success. Good teams, especially those with returning players, tend to excel year round, but there are always outliers at this point in the year. Going into Fridays action, the list of teams just below Toronto in exhibition standings included Cleveland, Golden State and Houston. No surprise there. It also included Detroit, New Orleans and Utah. So, who knows? We dont get a trophy for this? Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri joked. I think its the coaches time, its the players time, he continued. I think these guys have done a good job in preparing. I call it preparing. Its tough for us. I stay away, go to Europe to scout and get involved in other things just because you want to get down to it right away. Were here, a week out. And the reason why the Raptors feel good about where theyre at, just days before Wednesdays season opener, has almost nothing to do with wins and losses. Weve got a lot of guys from last year so we really dont have to figure out too many things, said DeMar DeRozan, who led Toronto with 15 points in Fridays exhibition finale. I think its mainly for the new guys to get implemented with our system on both ends. Its not too hard at all. As promised, Casey used Fridays contest to extend the minutes of his regulars, hoping to get them in rhythm and get comfortable in a more conventional rotation. One of his starters, Jonas Valanciunas, learned an early-season lesson courtesy of his defensive minded head coach. The third-year centre was beat on three box-outs in the opening five minutes, each resulting in an offensive rebound for Samuel Dalembert, before he was pulled and spent the rest of the half on the bench. Whatever message was sent at intermission, it was received in the third quarter when a noticeably more aggressive Valanciunas scored nine of his 13 points and added three boards. As a team, the Raptors held New York to 15 per cent shooting in the frame, besting them 14-7 on the glass and outscoring the visitors 25-11. As for those newcomers DeRozan referenced, they looked ready to start the new campaign on Friday. James Johnson was held without a point, on two shots, but earned praise from Casey after the game for his defence on Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. Casey called it his best game of the pre-season. Lou Williams did what he does best, knocking down a pair of big fourth-quarter shots and finishing with 12 points off the bench. Their first real test will come on Wednesday, following four days of practice and preparation, when they host the Hawks to open the franchises 20th season. Like a second home Le Nord Cest Nous, read advertisements situated throughout the city of Montreal, a French translation of the Raptors popular marketing slogan We The North. That message has resonated here, like it has in Toronto, throughout Canada and within the teams locker room. Fridays sellout crowd at the Bell Centre, like the packed house in Vancouver earlier this fall, served as a reminder that the Raptors are well on their way to being adopted as the countrys team, if they havent already. Its been huge, Casey said of the support his team has received throughout the Great White North. The pride that I see around the country for basketball, for the Raptors has been unbelievable. Part of the NBA Canada Series, the Raptors played their third pre-season game in Montreal. Along with Halifax, its the only Canadian city outside of Toronto to host three exhibition contests. DeRozan has made all three trips, first as a sophomore in 2010 and then again a couple years later. Its great, the Raptors all-star guard said of the atmosphere. Just coming off the season that we had last year and the success, just to come back around and be in Montreal, just to get that support in a different part of Canada definitely means a lot. I think We The North gives the country some pride and a good feeling about the Raptors, Casey added. Now we have to do our part in continuing to compete at a high level and I think its the way we do compete. Winning is important but I think people appreciate how hard our guys play, how we play defence, how we share the basketball and play together. I think thats a great lesson for the future of basketball in Canada. Respect for Nash Canada basketball took a hit late Thursday evening when the Los Angeles Lakers announced that Victorias Steve Nash has been ruled out for this coming season with a back injury that likely spells the end to his brilliant 18-year career. That said, the news did give Canadians and folks around the basketball universe an opportunity to pause, look back and appreciate everything the future Hall-of-Famer did as a pioneer for the sport in this country and one of the premier point guards to ever play the game. Its sad, Casey said of the two-time MVPs likely retirement. But hes done so much good; its hard to get sad for Steve because hes meant so much to Canadian basketball, to the NBA period. Hes the prototypical point guard that you teach your point guards to be like. We shouldnt be sad. Casey remembers his days coaching in Seattle - an assistant with the SuperSonics - when Nash used to come down to workout with Gary Payton, an iconic point guard of the previous generation. Ive known him for a long time, said the Raptors coach. Nothing but love and respect for his game. Nashs resume is undeniable. An eight-time all-star, the 40-year-old is third on the NBAs all-time assists list and has appeared in more post-season games than any other player without a ring in history. Amazingly, he was at the helm of the leagues best offence for nine straight years, on two different teams. The way that Phoenix [team] played, Casey said, that style of play was unique because of him. I think a lot of people tried to emulate that style of freewheeling, up and down basketball but unless you have a Steve Nash its very difficult to play that style of basketball. Hes been an unbelievable player, Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry echoed. Hes done a great job for basketball in general. He kind of changed the way people look at smaller guards. Schumaker gets a $2 million base salary next season and $2.5 million in 2015. The deal includes a club option for 2016 with a $2.5 million base and a $500,000 buyout. The 33-year-old Schumaker was drafted by current Reds general manager Walt Jocketty and played his first eight seasons in St. Louis, batting .288 with 23 homers and 211 runs batted in. He played for the Dodgers last season, batting .263 in 125 games with two homers and 30 RBIs. He played second base and all three outfield positions last season. "Im not going to assume anything other than that Ill be off the bench, the role Ive been in the last couple of years in the major leagues," Schumaker said during a conference call. "I dont think it will be that much different -- being used off the bench more than anything." To open a spot on the 40-man roster, the Reds designated outfielder Derrick Robinson for assignment. Robinson split time between Triple-A Louisville and Cincinnati last season, batting .255 in 102 games for the Reds. Schumaker was interested in staying with the Dodgers, but got the impression he wasnt a prioority during contract talks.dddddddddddd When the Reds showed an interest, he quickly decided to take the offer rather than go deep into the off-season as a free agent. "I had a great time in LA and especially with the run we had to get to the playoffs, the whole deal of how we started, how we finished -- a pretty amazing run," he said. "I felt there was some unfinished business and maybe going back there. "During negotiations, I kind of felt like maybe I was on the backburner, maybe hold on and sit and wait and see how things developed and what was going on in their organization. And I really didnt want to wait. I felt so good about Cincinnati." The Reds have won 90 games and made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, but failed to make it past the first round. They fired manager Dusty Baker after they lost the one-game wild card playoff in Pittsburgh. Schumaker said the Reds recent success was a major factor in his decision. "The first thing I wanted to do was sign with a team that has a chance to win," he said. "The Reds have been that way, one of the best teams in the National League the last three or four years. I knew that division really well. Walt Jocketty drafted me and gave me the opportunity to play professional baseball." General Discussion / Kenseth has been
« on: November 08, 2018, 11:46:26 AM »
LONG POND, Pa. - Matt Kenseth was NASCARs biggest winner in 2013, a dominant run that thrust him into contention for his second championship. He came up just short. Seven wins, no title. Small consolation. Kenseths first year with Joe Gibbs Racing was a smashing success except for winning a championship to bookend with the one he has from 2003. Kenseth found the hard way that wins are nice, but winning it all matters more. Headed into Sundays race at Pocono Raceway, Kenseth is atop the points standings but the only driver in the top nine without at least one checkered flag. NASCAR revamped the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format this year to add great significance to winning a race in the first 26 before the cutoff. Kenseth would be a lock for the field with a victory. Without one, Kenseth might have to hope he keeps his points lead: The regular-season leader earns a spot even with a winless season. Kenseth has won 13 races the last three years and it seems inevitable hell find his way in Victory Lane soon enough. He has never won at Pocono, but has two career wins at next weeks track (Michigan) and hes won three times at Bristol (Aug. 23). Hed surrender the lead for taking the No. 20 Toyota for a spin in Victory Lane soon. "Youd rather have a win at this time of year than be the points leader," he said. "Its definitely different. We knew it was a radical change, but youre sitting here because youre the points leader but you open up the paper and they dont have you in the top-10. Its a little bit confusing at times. So yeah, hopefully we can get a win." Kenseth joins the rest of the field in trying to race his way past Jimmie Johnson. The six-time champion is coming off back-to-back victories in the Coca-Cola 600 and at Dover International Speedway and will try to win three straight for the first time since 2007. Steady as always, Kenseth has been in the hunt for several wins. He just cant find that one edge that will get him one. He has five top-five finishes and 10 top-10s in 13 races for a 9.2 average finish. Hes finished third in each of the last two races. "People always ask about changing your strategies or trying harder or doing this or doing that, but if it was that easy, youd win every week," he said "Ive never not wanted to win. If there was a way to force wins, Id force it every week." With half the season left before the Chase field is set, Kenseth isnt worried too much about his winless season. Former champion Tony Stewart also is winless. So are Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman, on the outside of the Chase and in a lot worse shape. "I think there has been a touch of bad luck and then we just havent put together full races," Kahne said. "Weve had great practices over the last month, maybe a little more than that. Weve been really good in practice; great at times during the race, but we havent put together the full race." Kenseth isnt quite sure why the No. 20 has yet to come close to matching last seasons success. "If we knew exactly that, it would be a lot easier to fix," he said. "Theres been times you get pretty good car balance, but you havent had the speed. You always try to look over everything and look over how you get your vehicles setup better, how you can get your aero setup better, how you can get your engines better." General Discussion / the Pittsburgh Penguins have
« on: November 08, 2018, 11:44:18 AM »
MINNEAPOLIS -- After a strong start to the season, the Atlanta Hawks never thought theyd be in a fight to make the playoffs when April came rolling around. If they dont find a way to stop the tumble theyve been on before March closes, they could find themselves on the outside looking in. Gorgui Dieng had 15 points and 15 rebounds to continue his out-of-nowhere emergence, and the Minnesota Timberwolves dealt the slumping Hawks another costly loss with a 107-83 victory. "I think to a certain degree each guy has just got to find it in him," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "And I think the group has got to find the energy that the group can build. Weve spent most of this season playing with very good energy, so I think theres a lot of things we can pull on an reference to how we want to play and tonight would not be one of those nights." Paul Millsap had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta (31-39), which has lost four straight and has the New York Knicks right in their rearview mirror for the eighth and final playoff spot. Jeff Teague, who had averaged more than 23 points over the previous four games, went scoreless for the first time this season on 0-for-5 shooting. "I think we just didnt come ready to play," Hawks guard DeMarre Carroll said. "Once we started missing a lot of shots, then we lost our focus. At this time of year, you cant lose your focus." Corey Brewer and Kevin Martin each scored 18 points and Kevin Love had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Minnesota scored 32 points off 26 Hawks turnovers and blew the game open in the second half. The struggling Wolves defence held Atlanta to 37.8 per cent shooting and had six of its 17 steals in the third quarter to start pulling away. With starting centre Nikola Pekovic out for the sixth straight game, Wolves coach Rick Adelman had no choice but to thrust the rookie Dieng into the first significant minutes of his career. Dieng has flourished with the added responsibility, posting double-doubles in five of the six games. He had 10 points and 13 rebounds in the first half, helping the Wolves weather an unusually quiet night from Love. "I dont care what the record is or where we are in the season, were trying to make them believe that we still have work to do," Wolves coach Rick Adelman said. "We still have to get better as a team and as individuals." The last time these two teams met, on Feb. 1, the Hawks overcame 43 points and 19 rebounds from Love to win for the fifth time in seven games. That put them at 25-22 and in third place in the Eastern Conference. But the Hawks have gone 6-17 since then, a slide exacerbated by injuries to Gustavo Ayon and Kyle Korver, who missed his fourth straight game with back spasms. Atlantas crumbling, combined with a surprising surge from the Knicks, turned a playoff spot that once appeared to be a foregone conclusion into anything but a sure thing. They led the ninth-place Knicks by three games for the final spot in the muddled East. And yet on Wednesday night it was the Wolves, who have essentially been out of the Western Conference playoff race for about two weeks and were completely deflated after a home loss to the Suns on Sunday, who played with the urgency and tenacity on defence of a team that needs every win it can get. "We needed a game like this in order to get our spirits up," Love said. "It was good for us. It goes to show you were down, but were not out." The Hawks had won five straight games after an ugly string of 14 losses in 15 games. But they dropped games to the Pelicans, Raptors, Suns and Wolves to allow the Knicks to creep back into the race. "Were a close team," Hawks forward Mike Scott said. "Weve been through a slump before. Its not good at all. But we know how to do good things, were professionals and were going to stick together." NOTES: Ricky Rubio had four points on 1-for-6 shooting, but he also had 10 assists and six steals. He had to leave in the first quarter to get 15 stitches in his upper lip after a collision with Hawks forward Mike Scott. ... Hawks F Mike Muscala, who played in high school in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, had eight points and four rebounds in 23 minutes. If youve ever struggled to turn up the radio without turning off the cruise control, take a moment to pity the F1 drivers whose wheels make even the most complicated road cars look simplistic. Looking more like a games console controller than a traditional steering wheel, it now controls so much more than just the direction in which the tyres point. The introduction of the V6 hybrid engines for 2014 saw even more switches added to the wheels, with more and more in-race adjustments needing to be made by the driver. But just what do all the switches do? Thanks to Honda, here is a little explainer of what Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso have to work with on the McLaren MP4-31: But aside from fitting the buttons onto the wheel, there are other decisions teams need to take when it comes to the design. While McLaren, like many, have an LCD screen embedded in the wheel, Williams have built their screen into the car. This is said to save them weight, but perhaps more importantly means the screen is always facing the driver at the correct angle.  Force India have taken weight saving and cost saving further, by 3D printing their steering wheels this season, although the screen is still part of the wheel. ASHBURN, Va. -- An NFL game official was suspended Friday for one game without pay for making "a profane and derogatory statement" to a Washington Redskins player, an incident that has led to a call for NFL players to stop using the N-word on the field and in the locker room. The league announced Friday that umpire Roy Ellison will not work an NFL game this weekend as punishment for words directed at left tackle Trent Williams late in the second quarter of the Redskins loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The National Football League Referees Association issued a statement Friday evening saying that it will file a grievance, that the suspension was a rush to judgment without hearing Ellisons side of the story. Williams said he was called vulgar names -- although not the N-word -- by Ellison and did nothing to provoke it. A replay from the second quarter shows Ellison gesturing at Williams while walking backward just before a snap, with Williams, quarterback Robert Griffin III and tight end Niles Paul turning to look back at the umpire. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was among those who supported Williams, saying: "You just cant use that type of language to get your point across." But John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, group that includes minority coaches and officials, said his organization spoke to game officials who said that Ellison was responding after Williams directed the N-word at Ellison. Both Williams and Ellison are African-American. The incident, coming in the wake of allegations involving racially charged texts allegedly sent by Richie Incognito to a Miami Dolphins teammate, led the alliance to issue a statement imploring all NFL players to stop using the racial slur. "I think that we all understand clearly that in terms of supporting Roy, were not in any way condoning his reaction to what happened," Wooten told The Associated Press. "Theres no question in our mind what provoked all of this, that there was a disrespectful communication going on between Trent and an Eagle player. They were using the N-word along with all other type of profanity, and the N-word is what caused Roy to say, Hey, you need to be more respectful." Wooten, 76, said Williams then directed the profanity at Ellison. "There is no question in my mind that Trent said this to Roy, and I dont question that," said Wooten, who noted that he has not spoken to Ellison directly. "And thats what, with Incognito and all this stuff and the N-word and how its used in the locker room, that caused us to say, Hey, lets put an end to this." Wooten, who played nine seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Redskins, said Ellison should have thrown a flag on Williams instead of escalating the exchange. In announcing the suspension, the NFL said that "game officials are expected to avoid personal confrontations with players and be respectful of players and coaches at all times." Michael Arnold, NFLRA legal counsel, said Ellison is an accomplished 11-year veteran who is highly respected. "The NFL imposed its judgment upon him without consideration of all the facts," Arnold said. "The decision was arbitrary and unjustified and will be challenged with an immediate grievance." Jim Quirk, NFLRA executive director, said the "NFLs decision to suspend Mr. Ellison creates a double standard for what is acceptable on field conduct." He and Arnold cited the leagues decision to take no action against Williams. "The League insists that officials are held to a high standard but others involved in the game are held to no standard," Quick added. "Apparently the NFL accepts and condones a culture where players, coaches and teams can use racial slurs and profanity toward each other and at officials. "Music played in locker rooms and in the stadiums before games include racial slurs (including the "N" word) and references to sexual violence with impunity. These types of cheap slurs and racial banter on the field often lead to angry and emotional responses which can result in fighting and injury. This is completely contrary to the atmosphere of sportsmanship and respect the league says should exist in the game." Williams, 25, said on Wednesday he didnt expect the league to punish Ellison, saying the NFL would "probably sweep it under the rug." He also reiterated that he did not say anything provocative to Ellison. "If I said something of that nature to him, its at least a flag, or Im thrown out of the game," Williams said. "Id never say anything like that to a referee." Said Wooten: "I know that Trent has said he didnt say that. If thats what he wants to live with, he can live with that." Bergevin guided the Canadiens (46-28-8) to their second 100-point season since 1992-93 and their second playoff berth in as many years. He bolstered the offence with the summer signing of Daniel Briere and also added grit with the off-season acquisitions of Douglas Murray and George Parros. Bergevin then shored up the roster with mid-season trades for Thomas Vanek, Mike Weaver and Dale Weise, all of whom played critical roles in the team advancing to the Eastern Conference final for the second time in the past five seasons. Under the direction of Lombardi, the Kings (46-28-8) earned their fifth consecutive playoff berth, recorded their fourth 100-point season in franchise history and made their third straight appearance in the Western Conference final. He solidified the teams blue-line by re-signing defencemen Alec Martinez, Jake Muzzin and Slava Voynov and did the same up front by bringing back Dustin Brown, Kyle Clifford, Trevor Lewis and Jordan Nolan.dddddddddddd Lombardi then kick-started the clubs offence with the addition of Marian Gaborik at the trade deadline. Murray helped lead the Ducks to their second straight Pacific Division title. Anahem (54-20-8) had the top record in the Western Conference for the first time in club history and franchise records in wins (54) and points (116). Murray set the Ducks up for success by re-signing Matt Beleskey, Saku Koivu, Ben Lovejoy and Kyle Palmieri as well as enticing Teemu Selanne to return for one final season. Murray also traded for Mathieu Perreault during the pre-season and added depth players in Mark Fistric, Tim Jackman, Stephane Robidas and Jakob Silfverberg. PHOENIX - NFL Players Association President Eric Winston says the leagues new personal conduct policy violates the CBA in several ways and were going to be grieving this as far as we can.The union filed a grievance against the NFL last week over changes to the policy. NFL owners unanimously approved the changes in December. We have an agreement with the league and they have an agreement with us, Winston said. Were going to hold them to that agreement. Many aspects of this policy fall outside of the CBA and were going to continue fighting it going forward. The union and the league have been at odds over the personal conduct policy since both groups began navigating the Ray Rice domestic violence case and later Adrian Petersons child abuse case. After dealing with both issues, a more extensive list of prohibited conduct will be included in the policy, as well as specific criteria for paid leave for anyone charged with a violent crime.A suspension of six games without pay for violations involving assault, sexual assault, battery, domestic violence, child abuse and other forms of family violence will be in effect, but with consideration given to mitigating or aggravating circumstances. The leagues revised conduct policy was the product of a tremendous amount of analysis and work and is based on input from a broad and diverse group of experts within and outside of football, including current players, former players, and the NFL Players Association, the league said in a statement last week.We and the public firmly believe that all NFL personnel should be held accountable to a stronger, more effective conduct policy. Clearly, the union does not share that belief.Other items from the NFLPAs news conference on Thursday: NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said the union will issue its own salary cap projections for the first time. They want to counter inaccurate NFL projections. The projections are expected to be released before the scouting combine next month. Smith said no players on the New England Patriots were interviewed regarding the deflated footballs incident because the league wanted to wait until after the Super Bowl. He said each player will have a union lawyer with them. Winston said the union will discuss agent regulation at its meeting in March. He said the union needs to do a better job of deciding who they want representing their players.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org___Follow Rob Maaddi on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_RobMaaddi Cheap Dexter Manley Jersey .com) - Sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez was a first-round winner on Monday at the Delray Beach Open tennis event. And follow TSN.ca right through Deadline Day for all the updates. From Pierre LeBrun While Anaheim GM Bob Murray said earlier this season he was not going to trade Jonas Hiller despite the fact hes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, some sources have told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that Murray might be willing to move another goalie. LeBrun doesnt think John Gibson or Frederik Andersen are on the block, so by process of elimination, Viktor Fasth might be an option. Hes signed for another season at $2.9 million. Meanwhile, Washington Capitals GM George McPhee told LeBruun that his priority is still finding a suitor for Martin Erat. "The only thing Im working on that has to be done is moving (Martin) Erat," Caps GM George McPhee told LeBrun on ESPN.com. "There are some teams interested. He still wants out. Id love to be able to do it this weekend. But well see." Where the Edmonton Oilers are concerned, LeBrun hears that winger Ales Hemsky is getting decent traction on the market and that its a guarantee he gets dealt before Wednesday. LeBrun also says that veteran winger Ryan Smyth and Nick Schultz could be moved to contenders. Finally, theres no contract extension on the horizon for pending unrestricted free agent David Legwand, but with a full no-movement clause, Nashville Predators GM Poile says theres limit in his ability to explore the trade market. Unless an offer blows Poile away and is something Legwand wants, theres a good chance hell stay. In an update on the Vancouver Canucks, LeBrun writes that the Philadelphia Flyers could be interested in centre Ryan Kesler or defenceman Alexander Edler. If Kesler is in their sights, LeBrun imagines that the Canucks asking price in any Kesler deal would start with Brayden Schenn. But hes not sure the Flyers would go there.   Crunch Time For Phillips? TSN Hockey Darren Dreger tweeted Friday that the Ottawa Senators contract talks with defenceman Chris Phillips are expected to continue. He adds that a trade is still an option, with the Boston Bruins believed to be among teams with interest. Eyes On Brodeur? Randy Miller of NJ.com writes that Chicago Blackhawks director of player personnel Pierre Gauthier and pro scout Dennis Bonvie attended Thursday nights Devils-Blue Jackets game, as well as Minnesota Wild assisttant general manager Jim Nill.dddddddddddd Miller mentions that, according to rumours, both teams have been linked to Martin Brodeur. Still Shopping Around Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Sun wrote this week that the Senators could be interested in St. Louis Blues winger Chris Stewart and adds that the team likely wont be involved in the race for for Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson unless the asking price goes down. Garrioch also reports that theres been interest in forward Milan Michalek. The Sun story says its not known if hes talked contract with GM Bryan Murray and a decision may have to be made before Wednesday. Ward Off? Tough decisions lie ahead for Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. Dreger says that the team is open to trading any one of its three goaltenders ahead of Wednesdays trade deadline, including veteran Cam Ward. The Hurricanes have 61 points through 59 games this season and sit five points out of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Market For Mez? Philly.com writer Sam Carchidi writes that Flyers GM Paul Holmgren faces a tough decision on pending UFS defenceman Andrej Meszaros - trade him or keep him for the stretch run. Carchidi adds that the Boston Bruins - without Dennis Seidenberg for the season - are among the teams reportedly interested and that Bruins captain Zdeno Chara could be nudging the Bruins to add Meszaros. Carchidi also speculates that the Flyers could get a third-round pick or a prospect for Meszaros. No Big Sales In Sunrise Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon may be a seller, but he wont be conducting an all-out fire sale, writes George Richards of the Miami Herald. "Were going to do whats best for the Panthers to build a championship team," Tallon said during the recent Olympic break. "Were not blowing this thing up. If we can sell some assets to get better, well do that. It depends what happens in the next few weeks. Well be aggressive either way." Theres ample trade speculation surrounding pending UFAs Tim Thomas, Brad Boyes and Tom Gilbert, but Tallon said all three, deserve to stick around if they so wish. "Those guys have had good years and deserve the chance to stay," he said. "Im happy with the way theyve played, happy with their professionalism." Richards adds that other free agents the Panthers could offer include Marcel Goc, Mike Weaver and Dmitry Kulikov.
