Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Moulson scored the lone goal of the shootout to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday. Moulson, the Sabres first shooter, patiently skated up the slot and wristed a shot over Robin Lehners shoulder. Buffalo netminder Jhonas Enroth was a wall, stopping Ottawas first two shooters and the skills competition ended as Bobby Ryan rang a shot off the goalpost. Marcus Foligno and Brian Flynn each had a goal and an assist, while Rasmus Ristolainen and Moulson also lit the lamp for the Sabres, who won their fourth straight game. Enroth made 29 saves in the win. Curtis Lazar scored his first NHL goal, Alex Chiasson tallied a goal and a helper and Mark Stone and Ryan each had goal for the Senators, who were coming off a 3-2 shootout win over Boston on Saturday. Lehner stopped 29 pucks in defeat. Trailing 3-1, Stone took a pass from Kyle Turris and snapped a shot into the net with 6:18 to play in the middle stanza and the Senators tied the game 2:02 into the third on Lazars wrister. Chiasson deked around a diving defenseman and backhanded a shot past Enroth for a 4-3 lead 5:04 into the third, but Flynns wrister evened the score with 3:29 remaining to send the game into overtime. Ottawa outshot Buffalo by a 4-1 margin in the extra session, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went into a shootout. Mike Hoffman pushed a bouncing puck through the crease to Ryan, who tapped it in from the right side of the net for the games first goal 7:24 into the contest. Just over two minutes later, Chris Stewart whacked a puck out of the air and over the shoulder of Lehner. The goal, however, was overturned as video review determined that it was batted in with a high stick. Stewart took a pass below the goal line and found Ristolainen, who skated up to the right circle from the blue line and wristed a shot past Lehner for a tie game on the power play 4:11 into the second. The Sabres surged ahead with two goals separated by just 32 seconds. Moulson took a loose puck at the right post and deposited in to the net for a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the second period and Flynn skated up the right side and sent a pass across the slot to Foligno, who one-timed it in from the left side of the net at 7:32. Game Notes The Sabres have won six straight games at home for the first time since Jan. 1-Feb. 15, 2007 ... Moulson has four points (three goals, one assist) in his past four games ... John Wall stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds, five steals and three blocks for Washington, which has won four straight. After shooting 39.5 percent in the first half, Washington got hot in the third quarter and took a 67-58 lead after 36 minutes. The Wizards were 13-of-22 in the quarter, led by Beal and Paul Pierce with seven points each. Nenes fadeaway as time expired capped the quarter. We didnt play our (style of) basketball in the first half, Wizards center Marcin Gortat said. We were patient (in the second half) and started playing better. A fast start the fourth gave the Wizards their biggest lead of the game at 85-70. Except for a bucket from Beal, all of those points were scored by the Wizards reserves.dddddddddddd Washingtons bench outscored Utahs 33-17. Washington limited Utah to just two made field goals over the final six minutes to keep the Jazz from rallying. They took better care of the ball and executed better, Jazz head coach Quin Snyder said. We shot ourselves in the foot. After that neither team led by more than four, the first period ended with Utah holding a 24-22 advantage. Walls jumper with less than six minutes to go in the second quarter gave the Wizards their last lead of the first half, but it was followed by an 8-0 Jazz run capped by a Gordon Hayward jumper. Utah led 42-37 at the half when Pierce hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to shrink the Jazz lead. Game Notes At 17-6, Washington is 11 games over .500 for the first time since April 1, 2005 ... Utahs Derrick Favors sat out after injuring his ankle on Friday against Miami ... CHICAGO -- Jose Abreu hit a pair of run-scoring singles against Cleveland ace Corey Kluber, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Indians 3-2 Wednesday night to stop a season-high, seven-game losing streak. Abreu put Chicago ahead for good in the seventh with his third hit of the game. Hector Noesi (8-9) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, improving to 5-2 in eight starts since the All-Star break. Javy Guerra allowed Jason Kipnis one-out single in the ninth and hit Zach Walters with a pitch with two outs. Zach Putman relieved and retired Chris Dickerson on a flyout for his fourth save in five chances. Kluber (13-8) lost consecutive starts for the first time this year, allowing three runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings with eight strikeouts. The Indians had won three straight Michael Bourns run-scoring single put Cleveland ahead in the third. Chicago went ahead in the bottom half when Abreu hit an RBI single with two outs and scored on a double by Adam Dunn. Subban signed last season. "false Bobo," Kadri tweeted in a message that was later deleted from his account. McKenzie replied with his own tweet, saying, "Feel free to provide any details, Nazem, but Im satisfied with info conveyed in my tweets today." Kadri, who took part in an informal skate with teammates on Wednesday, was asked about the exchange. "I just dont want people to think Im unffair when, really, Im not being selfish at all," he said.dddddddddddd "I just dont know where those numbers are coming from to be honest. Not many people know the truth." When asked if he wanted to clear the air on his contract status, he replied, "Um, not really...I just want something thats fair, thats all." Kadri, who had no arbitration rights after completing his entry-level deal in June, was second in team scoring with 44 points in 48 games last season. The Maple Leafs have been at a standstill with Kadri and fellow restricted free agent Cody Franson as both players are seeking bigger contracts. The team has just under $5 million in cap space going into this season. That said, Kadri is not opposed to sitting out in an effort to wait for the right deal. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were involved in a tense exchange following the Hungarian GP as the Mercedes team-mates bickered over F1 rules. The pair were seated next to each other in a post-race press conference following Hamiltons victory in Budapest when they were asked about Rosbergs pole lap the previous day, when the German survived a stewards investigation for failing to slow through double-waved yellow flags. While Hamilton aborted his final flier in qualifying due after Fernando Alonsos spin, Rosberg set the fastest middle sector, only losing 0.1s, and went on to snatch top spot off the Brit. Report: Lewis takes title lead Lewis Hamilton took the lead of the world championship with victory ahead of Nico Rosberg. Hamilton was the first to make his point, stating: The whole 23 years of racing, if its a double-yellow flag, you be prepared to stop and Nico was doing the same speed at the apex as I was doing on the previous timed lap. Its a concern. Going into the next race, we could be going for pole position through double-yellow flags and now we know we only have to do a small lift and lose one tenth of a second, go purple through the sector, and well be fine. After finding extra pace when asked by Mercedes to speed up, Lewis Hamilton revealed he wasnt intentionally backing up Nico Rosberg and was managing his e Rosberg, after losing his title advantage and slipping six points behind his team-mate patted Hamilton on the back, saying thank you for that statement, before adding:What you have to do under double-yellows is significantly reduce your speed. I went 20 km/h slower, 20km/h is a different world in a Formula 1 car. I lifted off 30 metres before my braking point.Definitely I significantly reduced my speed and for the stewards that was completely acceptable, it was very, very clear what I did. SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Laura Diaz almost chose to walk away from golf to spend more time at home with her family. Now shes making the decision to juggle both jobs seem like a shrewd move. "I love being a mom; its the greatest thing in the world," she said after following a 9-under 62 with a solid 69 on Friday to maintain a three-shot lead through 36 holes at the Marathon Classic. "Its hard for me when I have to choose. So I made a list. My family is first, and then golf comes second and we work everything out in between." Chasing her first win since 2002, Diaz is at 11-under 131, three shots ahead of Lee-Anne Pace and Lydia Ko. Diaz led by four shots over Pace and Austin Ernst after the first round. She was pleased her game was sturdy enough to hang on to the lead despite being in the heat of contention for the first time in several years. "It was just a challenge because I havent been in this position in a very long time," Diaz said. "For sure, I havent had cameras on me in a long time." So she took the opportunity to say hello to her kids -- 8-year-old son Cooper and 4-year-old daughter Lilly. "(The cameras) get in my face and I dont really know what to do," she said. "I said, Hi, kiddos. I love you. That kind of stuff." She made sure the cameras stuck around with her strong play down the stretch. After a nine-birdie, no-bogey effort in the first round, she showed signs of faltering early on Friday. She had her first bogey of the tournament on the sixth hole to fall back into a tie with Pace and Ko, but then regained her touch after getting par on the next six holes. Starting at the 13th, she birdied four of the next six, including the par-5 closing hole. Diaz was a rising star early in her career, winning twice in 2002 and playing on four Solheim Cup teams. After she married Kevin Diaz, she found that she liked being a wife and mother more than travelling the world playing golf. She hasnt been in the top 20 of a tournament since 2010. Before the season she was torn between coming out on tour and staying home so as not to miss any of the daily routine. In the end, she decided to keep playing. "(It was) knowing that I could manage being a mom and play. I think thats something Ive struggled with, for, well eight years," she said. "When I only had one (child) I think I got to a point where I was OK. But with two youve got twice as much to get done. Pace, a South African who is an alum of the University of Tulsa, is looking for a breakthrough win on American soil. After a 68, she couldnt contain herself. "Im very happy about (my) position," said Pace, who has won eight times on the Ladies European Tour. "I would like to be in contention on the weekend. Thats when the fun starts, right?" The 17-year-old Ko is bidding for a second LPGA Tour title as a pro to go with the two she won as an amateur. She shot a second consecutive 67, turning in 1 under and then posting three birdies on the inward nine. The key, she said, was to keep her emotions in check. "I try and be calm. You know, thats what you have to do," she said, sounding far older than a rookie. "Being overly happy or overly angry, thats not going to help me." Lurking another shot back at 135 are 2012 Marathon winner So Yeon Ryu and Rebecca Lee-Bentham, both of whom shot 67s. Ryu was grouped with U.S. Open winner Michelle Wie and last weeks Womens British Open champion Mo Martin. A large gallery followed the threesome. "It was really great to be playing with the two major champions," Ryu said. "I felt like I was one of the other major champions." Brittany Lang had the days low round (66) and was at 136 along with Kayla Mortellaro. Cristie Kerr (67) led the pack of six golfers at 137. Defending champ Beatriz Recari of Spain followed a 70 with a 68 and was at 138 along with Martin, who shot a 71. Wie missed the cut by seven strokes. Jonathan Allen Jersey . James Harden nearly contributed a triple-double, scoring 18 with 10 assists and seven rebounds, and Trevor Ariza finished with 20 points in the win. Alec Burks led the Jazz with 18 points, while Derrick Favors deposited 16 points with seven rebounds and Trey Burke added 15 points in the setback. Dante Exum, the No. 5 overall selection in the 2014 NBA Draft, totaled five points with an assist and a steal in just under 10 minutes of action for Utah. The Jazz, who have lost six of their last seven against the Rockets, played tough in Quin Snyders debut as head coach for the club. The Rockets built a 75-62 lead late in the third, but Burke scored six points as ppart of a 10-0 run to close the frame.dddddddddddd The two teams traded a pair of buckets in the opening minutes of the fourth, then Houston put the game away with a 14-1 run. NEW YORK -- Despite seven months of international outcry, Russias law restricting gay-rights activity remains in place. Yet the eclectic protest campaign has heartened activists in Russia and caught the attention of its targets -- including organizers and sponsors of the Sochi Olympics that open on Feb. 7. Over the past two weeks, two major sponsors, Coca-Cola and McDonalds, have seen some of their Sochi-related social media campaigns commandeered by gay-rights supporters who want the companies to condemn the law. Several activists plan to travel to Sochi, hoping to team up with sympathetic athletes to protest the law while in the Olympic spotlight. And on Friday, a coalition of 40 human-rights and gay-rights groups from the U.S., Western Europe and Russia -- including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Human Rights Campaign -- released an open letter to the 10 biggest Olympic sponsors, urging them to denounce the law and run ads promoting equality for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. "LGBT people must not be targeted with violence or deprived of their ability to advocate for their own equality," the letter said. "As all eyes turn toward Sochi, we ask you to stand with us." The law, signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, bans pro-gay "propaganda" that could be accessible to minors -- a measure viewed by activists as forbidding almost any public expression of gay-rights sentiment. The law cleared parliament virtually unopposed and has extensive public support in Russia. Since July, when they launched a boycott of Russian vodka, activists have pressed the International Olympic Committee and Olympic sponsors to call for the laws repeal. Instead, the IOC and top sponsors have expressed general opposition to discrimination and pledged to ensure that athletes, spectators and others gathering for the Games would not be affected by the law. Putin has given similar assurances in regard to Sochi, but remains committed to the laws broader purposes. IOC President Thomas Bach has warned Olympic athletes that they are barred from political gestures while on medal podiums or in other official venues, but says they are free to make political statements at news conferences. One Olympian likely to speak out is gay Australian snowboarder Belle Brockhoff, who told Australias Courier-Mail newspaper that she plans to lambaste Putin. "After I compete, Im willing to rip on his ass," she told the newspaper. "Im not happy and theres a bunch of other Olympians who are not happy either." Brockhoff is one of several Olympians promising to display the logo P6 -- a reference to Principle Six of the Olympic Charter that says any form of discrimination "is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement." Hudson Taylor of Athlete Ally, an organizer of the P6 campaign, is among the activists going to Sochi. He hopes that some athletes, even if wary of wearing P6 symbols, will promote them via social media. Also heading to Sochi is Shawn Gaylord, advocacy counsel for Human Rights First. "We wont be looking to violate the law," he said. "But we think its important that human rights not get lost in the mix." President Barack Obama, who has criticized the Russian law, is skipping the Olympics and named a U.S. delegation that includes tennis great Billie Jean King and two other openly gay athletes. "The only way you break down barriers is by being there and meeting people and getting these issues out on the table -- doing it in an appropriate and diplomatic way," King told The Associated Press. In the U.S., recent protest initiatives have focused on Sochi sponsors, notably Coca-Cola and McDonalds. In McDonalds case, the companys #CheersToSochi Twitter hashtag has been used by activists in tweets condemning the Russian law and assailing McDonalds for not speaking out forcibly against it. Similarly, activists made use of an online "Id like to share a Coke with..." promotion to circulate images of Coke cans with labels such as "Gaybashers" and "Haters." The gay-rights group Queer Nation posted a video online interspersing images of embattled Russian gay-rights demonstrators into Cokes 1970s TV ad featuring the song, "Id Like to Teach the World to Sing." Coke then posted a clip of the original ad on its Facebook page, drawing a flood of negative comments from gay-rights supporters. Coke has responded with declarations of support for diversity and inclusiveness, which are themes of Cokes new Super Bowl advertising. A Coca-Cola spokeswoman, Ann Moore, said the company remained committed to the Olympics despite criticism from gay-rights activists. "We share these groups belief in human rights, equality, diversity and dignity for all, and we respect their right to protest peacefully," Moore said in an email. "We firmly believe, however, that supporting the Olympics focuses the world on the ideals that everyone strives for during the Games -- excellence, friendship and respect." Becca Hary, a McDonalds spokeswoman, made similar points. "Social media is all about conversation. Understandably, the LGBT community is focusing its conversation on the Russian legislation," she said in an email. "McDonalds is proud to be a top sponsor of the Olympics; our sponsorship dollars literally help the men and women who are working to achieve their Olympic dreams." Hary and Moore said their companies were conferring with the IOC about human rights. "We expect our ongoing engagement to include discussions on long-term, sustainable means for addressing human rights in the context of the Olympic Games," Moore wrote. Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, predicted that sponsors would henceforth insist that the IOC make human rights a more important factor in selection of host cities. "There will be a reckoning after the Games," Worden said. "Olympic sponsorship is supposed to be the goose that lays the golden eggs, but this goose is not laying golden eggs. Its laying stinky, rotten eggs." The international gay-rights group All Out plans to target Olympic sponsors in demonstrations next Wednesday in several cities, including New York, London, Rio de Janeiro and St. Petersburg, Russia. Even if the Russian law endures, All Out executive director Andrew Banks considers the overall protest campaign a success. "Weve been able to elevate the voices and stories of Russian LGBT people ... and show there are people all over the world willing to stand behind them," he said. While expressing appreciation for the allies abroad, prominent Russian activist Anastasia Smirnova said she feared that "dangerous self-censorship" might deter some Olympians in Sochi from taking stands against the law. In an email Friday, she also worried about a possible backlash against Russian gays once the Olympic spotlight fades. Nate Solder Giants Jersey . General Discussion / opportunity with the Steelers

HALLE, Germany -- Roger Federer won the Gerry Weber open for the seventh time by defeating Alejandro Falla 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) in the final on Sunday. Federer fired five aces and saved three of the five break points he faced to win in 1 hour, 28 minutes. It was the 32-year-olds 14th title on grass and 79th overall. The seven-time Wimbledon champion improved his record to 46-5 in 12 appearances at the tournament where he made his debut 14 years ago. It was also Federers seventh win from seven meetings with Falla. The 69th-ranked Falla was the first Colombian to reach the final of a grass-court tournament. He was playing his second on tour after he finished runner-up to Ivo Karlovic at Bogota in 2013. Kenny Young Jersey . - Roger Federer squandered a big lead and lost to No. Willie Snead IV Jersey . LOUIS - The St.PITTSBURGH -- The chip is still there, Lance Moore insists, just as weighty and sharp as ever. Eight years in the NFL and a Super Bowl ring have done little to make the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver forget his modest roots. He can still rattle off the name of the players who beat him out for a job with the Cleveland Browns during his first training camp nearly a decade ago even though he was a long-shot undrafted free agent at the time. Most of them are long gone. Not Moore. Hes still around, still trying to prove himself, still nervous he could find himself out of a job at any minute. "I dont know if I ever really let myself get comfortable," Moore said. Even if Moore spent eight productive seasons helping Drew Brees and Sean Payton turn the New Orleans Saints into one of the NFLs most consistent winners. On a team of undersized and underappreciated talent, the 5-foot-9 Moore found a home. He caught 38 touchdown passes in 101 games with New Orleans, morphing from special teams ace to indispensable red zone target. Until, of course, the math got in the way. A hand injury limited Moore to just 37 receptions and two scores in 2013. Knowing he was owed $3.8 million in 2014, Moore wasnt surprised when the Saints cut him loose this spring. "Thats how it goes in this game," Moore said. "A lot of teams are trying to get younger and cheaper at the same time." Moore turns 31 in August. He understands hes well into the second half of an NFL journey that is already longer than he ever anticipated. Yet there is something about the opportunity with the Steelers that intrigues him. Maybe its because playing slot receiver in Pittsburgh is like discovering the NFLs fountain of youth. Hines Ward was effective well into the final days of his 14-year career before retiring in 2012. He was replaced by Jerricho Cotchery, who scored a remarkable 10 touchdowns for the Steelers in 2013 at age 31. Cotchery turned all those scores into a lucrative contract with Carolina. Enter Moore, who lacks Cotcherys size and Wards tenacious blocking skills but makes up for it with what he describes as "football savvy." "Ive been little for a long time," Moore said. &"I am not getting any bigger.dddddddddddd I am 30 years old. I am happy in this body. I feel like I have made a lot of plays and will continue to do that." Its exactly what the Steelers had in mind when they signed Moore to a two-year deal in March, an agreement that came with more than a little help from backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, who spent four years rooming with Moore when the two played at Toledo. Gradkowski started calling Pittsburgh coaches about Moore the second his good friend was released by New Orleans. It didnt take long for something to get done. Moore wasnt about to sit around and wait for a more lucrative offer than the one that will pay him a total of $3 million if he makes it through the 2015 season. "You look at this franchise, what it stands for and you know theyre about winning," Moore said. "You get a chance to play with somebody like (quarterback) Ben (Roethlisberger) and you dont turn it down." It hasnt taken long for Moore to win over Roethlisberger, who called his newest target "a pro" who hasnt needed much time to pick up the nuances of an offence that is reshaping itself, particularly at wide receiver. Pro Bowler Antonio Brown is the units unquestioned leader, but the departure of Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders a year after Mike Wallace bolted for Miami has spearheaded a youth movement. The list of players jockeying for position with Moore include second-year players Justin Brown and Markus Wheaton and rookie Martavis Bryant. Moore admits its a little weird being the old guy in meeting rooms. Hes nearly five years Browns senior and will be one of only three players in their 30s among Pittsburghs offensive regulars, joining Roethlisberger and tight end Heath Miller. It could be worse. Moore couldnt be here at all. If this is the beginning of the end, hell take it. Hes close to his boyhood home in Ohio on a team expecting to win after a pair of mediocre 8-8 seasons. His new team expects to play a lot like its new wide receiver: with a chip that likely wont go away anytime soon. "Youve got to keep that," Moore said. "In this league, that can make the difference." General Discussion / played 10 years ago

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Joe Maddons voice cracked with emotion. The Tampa Bay Rays are mired in the second-longest skid in the major leagues this season, yet they suffered a much greater loss with the death of club senior adviser Don Zimmer. "We lost a good buddy tonight," Maddon, fighting back tears, said Wednesday following Tampa Bays ninth consecutive defeat, 5-4 to the Miami Marlins. "Im going to miss his advice ... his feistiness and fire. He was about winning, doing whatever it takes to win." Donovan Solano hit a three-run homer off David Price and closer Steve Cishek escaped a ninth-inning jam the help the Marlins hold on for their third straight win in a four-game home-and-home series between the intrastate rivals. Tampa Bays losing streak is the teams longest in nearly five years and is becoming more frustrating by the day. The Rays hit into three double plays for the second straight night, are 0-for-their-last 31 with runners in scoring position and will match the longest skid in the majors this season if they drop Thursdays series finale at Tropicana Field. Boston dropped 10 straight from May 15 to 25, with Tampa Bay handing them the last three losses in the streak. The Rays havent won since. But that wasnt the focal point in a sombre clubhouse following the game. Maddon said he learned of Zimmers death during the third inning and informed his coaches, but not the players. Word gradually spread through the dugout, where third-base coach Tom Foley was spotted weeping before slipping into Zimmers No. 66 jersey and wearing it for the remainder of the game in memory of the former player, coach and manager, whose career in baseball spanned more than 60 years. "The organization wanted to do it and it fell on me," Foley said. "Major League Baseball decided to have one of the coaches wear it. I was honoured to do it." Star third baseman Evan Longoria said Zimmer will be missed on and off the field. "Zim was a great man, and there are no words to explain what he brought to us and what he meant to me. Its just been a rough go for us, and this kind of is the icing on the cake, so to speak," Longoria said. "I know that he would want us to continue on and just honour him by doing all the things that he preached to us, playing the game the right way and playing the game hard. Going out there on a daily basis and really caring." Casey McGehee had an RBI single for the Marlins, who won 1-0 on Tuesday on a bases-loaded walk. The sputtering Rays, coming off an 0-8 trip that was the worst in team history, tumbled 14 games under .500 at 23-37 -- the second-worst record in baseball. The last time they were this far below the break-even point was the end of 2007, the final season they were called the Devil Rays. The team has made the playoffs as the Rays four of the past six seasons, but are in the midst of a horrendous offensive slump thats seen them bat .217 on the trip to Toronto, Boston and Miami and score 21 runs during their longest skid since dropping 11 straight in September 2009. Tom Koehler (5-5) pitched five innings for the Marlins, allowing three first-inning runs on Ben Zobrists two-run homer and a solo shot by Evan Longoria. Bryan Morris and Mike Dunn shut down the Rays over the next three innings, and Cishek earned his 13th save in 14 opportunities. The Rays loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth on an error, a high-bouncing bloop double and a walk, but only scored once. Cishek walked Longoria intentionally to reload the bases with two outs, then got James Loney to pop out to end the game. "It got a little hairy there at the end. Ive seen that happen here, at this place, the high choppers and the bloops," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Exactly how that ninth inning happened, Ive seen that a lot here," Redmond added. "But fortunately, Shek kept it together and was able to pitch through it, and got a couple big outs and locked down a win." Price (4-5) allowed five runs -- one earned -- and nine hits in 7 1-3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked none, but paid for Longorias third-inning error and gave up Solanos first home run of the season. After being limited to two runs over the last four games of their woeful trip, the first three batters scored against Koehler, who walked David DeJesus before giving up home runs to Zobrist and Longoria, who has just one other extra-base hit in his past 23 games. The Marlins rebounded with four unearned runs in the third, the first scoring when Longoria failed to hold onto the ball after fielding a grounder at third base and applying a tag on a sliding Marcell Ozuna for what should have been the final out of the inning. The miscue left Miami with runners at first and third. Solano hit his homer to left field on the next pitch for a 5-3 lead. NOTES: Tampa Bay OF Wil Myers, who will be in a cast for five to six weeks due to a stress fracture in his right wrist, is hopeful that the time off will also help a sore left wrist that he hurt early in the season. ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow surgery) says he will make his first rehab start Saturday for Single-A Charlotte. He expects to be back before the All-Star break. ... C Ryan Hanigan, on the DL with right hamstring tightness, caught Hellicksons bullpen session. ... Miami RHP Carter Capps (strained right elbow) got a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, who agreed with team doctors that the reliever can resume playing catch after a month of rest. ... Weaver, 35, has six assists in 55 games this season but is more known for his defensive prowess. In the past, Weaver has been considered something of a specialist against Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. "If I stay out of the paper, Im doing my job," he said jokingly, as quoted by the Canadiens official website. "Im not a guy whos going to score a lot of points but I do the little things like block shots and penalty killing is my specialty. Id rather block a shot than score a goal so I guess you could say Im a goalies best friend back there." As the Panthers make moves for next season and beyond, general manager Dale Tallon was more than willing to give Weaver a shot to go to the Canadiens. "Were just looking to thhe future.dddddddddddd Montreal was in need of a solid defensive defenceman, and we felt that it was a good thing for Mike Weaver to get into the playoff picture and have a good opportunity to win with Montreal," Tallon said on a conference call Tuesday night. "Hes a great warrior, played his rear end off for us every night, blocked, shots, killed penalties, so I wish him well." Weaver has played in 585 career NHL games with the Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues. This is the first time he has been traded. Its the second year in a row the Habs went for defensive depth at the blue-line. They traded a fifth-rounder last year to the Kings for Davis Drewiskie, who played nine games for Montreal to finish out the 2013 season. Weaver is in the final season of a US$2.2-million, two-year deal. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1. General Discussion / going after his fourth

PARAMUS, N.J. -- About the only thing that went wrong for Hunter Mahan at The Barclays was when the trophy broke. All he had to show for perhaps the biggest win of his career was a large wreath of roses. "Am I supposed to put this on, Kentucky Derby style?" he said. That would have been fitting. The closing stretch was exactly what he needed Sunday. Mahan pulled away with three straight birdies, sealing the victory with a 20-foot putt down the slope on the par-5 17th. That allowed him a bogey from the trees on the final hole for a 6-under 65 and a two-shot victory in the opening FedEx Cup playoff event. He already has two World Golf Championships. Considering the timing, The Barclays felt bigger. Mahan had gone 48 tournaments and nearly 30 months since his last victory. The only player to never miss a FedEx Cup playoff event, he wanted to keep alive his streak of reaching the Tour Championship every year since this series began in 2007. And he wanted to state his case for a captains pick for the Ryder Cup team. This performance will be hard for U.S. captain Tom Watson to ignore. "To get a win in an event like this, and the timing that it was, it feels unbelievable," Mahan said. "This game is all about winning," he said. "You can have a great year and if you dont win, it just feels like you missed out on something. So to get a win, and do it in a tournament like this in this kind of fashion with a 65 on Sunday, feels great." On a day when six players had at least a share of the lead, Mahan found a way to make it look like a comfortable win at Ridgewood. He rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt to take the outright lead on the par-3 15th, hit wedge to 3 feet for a birdie on the 16th and then rolled in a 20-foot birdie on the par-5 17th. That stretched his lead to three shots going to the final hole when Cameron Tringale bogeyed the 18th. Mahan tried to make it a little more exciting that he needed it to be. He drove into the trees on the right, pitched back to the fairway, pulled his approach into the rough and kept the outcome in doubt until he made the 8-foot bogey putt. Jason Day, who shared the 54-hole lead with Jim Furyk, would have needed to hole out from the rough on the 18th to force a playoff and he missed the green. Day closed with a 68 and shared second place with Stuart Appleby (65) and Tringale, who celebrated his 27th birthday with a 66. Furyk now has failed to win the last eight times he has held at least a share of the lead going into the final round. He was in the mix until missing the fairway on the 14th and taking bogey, and he wound up with a 70 to finish in eighth place, four shots behind. Mahan posed with the crystal trophy with his wife and 1-year-old daughter who flew in to surprise him. He wanted one more picture with David Finn, his biggest fan and a popular figure in these parts. Finn is in a wheelchair with a disorder affecting his limbs and leaving him unable to speak. Mahan got up to leave, picked up the trophy by its top and the bottom mysteriously broke off. That can be replaced. The victory was one Mahan wont soon forget. "Theres really never a bad time to play good golf," he said. "And this is a really, really good time to play good golf." Tringale began the week with questions about disqualifying himself from the PGA Championship several days after the final major ended. He said he had doubts about whether he whiffed a tap-in for bogey and thus signed for a wrong score. He said he wanted a clear conscience. "Didnt expect it to be this clear," Tringale said with a smile. This was the best finish of his career, and it paid off handsomely. Tringale, who was No. 61 in the standings, moved all the way up to No. 10 and is virtually certain of being in the Tour Championship, which puts him in the majors next year -- including his first trip to the Masters. The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings advance to the second playoff event next week outside Boston. Seven players outside the top 100 at the start of the week qualified for the Deutsche Bank Championship, including Morgan Hoffmann at No. 124. Hoffman, who grew up minutes away from Ridgewood, played with Mahan and had a 69 to tie for ninth. Geoff Ogilvy earned the 100th spot, only it wasnt in his hands. Ogilvy missed the cut, and his chances came down to Brendon Todd, who made a 15-foot par putt on the last hole. If Todd had missed the putt, Troy Merritt would have been at No. 100 by about a half-point. Mahan finished at 14-under 270 and earned $1.44 million. He moved to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings, assured of being among the top five players at East Lake with the best shot at capturing the $10 million bonus. British Open and PGA champion Rory McIlroy, going after his fourth straight victory, closed with a 70 and tied for 22nd. Dion Waiters Jersey . The result was a game-winning, power-play goal. MANCHESTER, England - The English Premier League season is approaching its halfway point and a number of storylines are beginning to take shape.Chelsea and Manchester City are unstoppable forces and will fight it out for the title. Manchester Uniteds resurgence, based on its glut of attacking riches, is offering a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect next season with its defence sorted out.And the fight for the final Champions League place could involve five or six teams and be the most thrilling in years. The second part of the festive fixture pileup takes place on Sunday, when squad strength is set to come into play as 18 of the leagues 20 teams play their second matches in the space of 48 hours.Chelsea holds a three-point lead over City heading into a tricky-looking away match at Southampton, which has recovered from a blip and is back in the top four. In my opinion, they are the best team in the Premier League until now, but we believe in ourselves and it will be a great game.Southampton has struggled against the top teams this season, though, losing to Liverpool, City, Arsenal and Man United.___ROONEY REVELLINGWayne Rooney has dropped back into central midfield as Man United manager Louis van Gaal looks to find a spot for all his attacking players — and the England captain is responding with some of his best form in years.Rooney scored twice in Fridays 3-1 win over Newcastle to take his team-high tally to nine goals for the season. He has scored eight times in his last eight games for club and country, and is keeping up his scoring form despite playing in midfield for United. Its a role that Ive played many times and I know I can play, said Rooney, who has played behind Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie for the last two games. The team is 13 points behind where it was last season after 18 games, with its regression perhaps due to its involvement in the Europa League.Everton lost 1-0 at home to Stoke on Friday during which defender Phil Jagielka, American goalkeeper Tim Howard and winger Kevin Mirallas were injured and are all set to miss Sundays trip to Newcastle. It is a pivotal moment in the season for us, Everton manager Roberto Martinez said. He always trained good. Hes straightforward. He was a little keen early in his last race, but Cornelio (Velasquez) did a nice job trying to slow him down early. Hes done everything right sincce that race.dddddddddddd Ask me April 15th how we like him, but right now we like him a lot. Locally based trainer Stanley Gold will saddle Twotwentyfive A for a sixth time in the chestnut colts career. Owned by Jacks or Better Farm, Twotwentyfive A will be ridden by Jesus Rios from post 5. I think the distance will be good for him and its one turn, Gold said. Well throw out the two (Gulfstream Park West) races. He didnt run good there, but he trained good before them and he trained good after them. This is a definite class check. Twotwentyfive A captured the seven-furlong $250,000 Affirmed Division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 6 just five weeks after winning his debut start. He then finished fourth the next two starts with a fifth on Nov. 29. The colt has banked $203,038. Here is the field for the Mucho Macho Man in post position order: Dekabrist, Oriel Chavez; Amis Flatter, Luis Contreras; Bluegrass Singer, Javier Castellano; A. Rod Again, Julien Leparoux; Twotwentyfive A, Jesus Rios; Honest, Paco Lopez; Juan and Bina, Edgar Prado; Brother Bobo, Gabriel Saez and Mawthooq, John Velazquez. CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers are headed toward the All-Star break on a high note. So is Anthony Bennett, the much-maligned No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. As the Cavaliers avenged a 44-point loss to Sacramento with a 109-99 win over the Kings on Tuesday night, Bennett had 19 points and 10 rebounds -- both career highs -- in Clevelands third straight win. "Youre starting to see a little bit of what we see in practice and the reason why we drafted him," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Hes a talented young man and hes starting to come to life a little bit. Hes even better than what you saw tonight." Former general manager Chris Grant, who was fired last week, was roundly criticized for taking Bennett with the first pick in June, but the rookie from UNLV has made major strides after being a non-factor until mid-January. "Anthony Bennett kicked our butt," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "Im sure Chris Grant is smiling at home -- and deservedly so -- because that was his No. 1 pick." Bennett was smiling, too. Asked when the last time he had fun playing basketball he said, "I dont remember, but today was one of those days." Bennett hit two 3-pointers in a little over a minute in the second quarter and scored 11 points in the first half. His 3-pointer with 4:40 left in the game gave Cleveland a 100-85 advantage. Bennett was aggressive going to the basket -- going to the line nine times. Bennett had shoulder surgery before the draft and didnt play in the summer league. He adjusted slowly once the season began, and his minutes were limited when he played. That has changed. "It feels great," Bennett said. "All the hard work Ive put in with the players and coaching staff is paying off." Brown began giving him playing time last month after he showed progress in practice. "Its not anything that all of a sudden happened overnight," Brown said. "Hes a good basketball player. He can pass it. He can shoot it. He can run the floor. He can finish in traffic. He can rebound." Luol Deng led the Cavaliers with 22 points, and Dion Waiters added 20. The Cavaliers, beaten 124-80 in Sacramento on Jan. 12, took a double-figure lead early in the second quarter and were in control the remainder of the game. Cleveland has won three in a row for the second time this season. Cleveland also won three straight from Dec. 7-13. The Cavaliers will go for a season-high, four-game winning streak in their final game before the All-Star break on Wednesday at Detroit. Cleveland has won all three games since Grant was fired. DeMarcus Cousins scored 21 points to lead the Kings, who have lost 10 of 12 and seven straight on the road. The Cavaliers built a 67-49 lead in the third quarter. The Kings cut their deficit to seven points early in the fourth, but Cleveland went on a 7-0 run, sparked by Kyrie Irvings 3-pointer, to go ahead 91-77. Irving, who was 3 of 14 with seven points in the first meeting, had 13 points and six assists. The Cavaliers broke a three-game losing streak against the Kings. Cousins, taking advantage of a matchup with Cleveland centre Tyler Zeller, had 11 points and six rebounds in the first quarter. The Cavaliers played without starting centre Anderson Varejao, who missed the game with a sore back. Cousins didnt score again in the half. The Cavaliers used a combination of Zeller, Tristan Thompson and Henry Sims in an attempt to neutralize Cousins, who was averaging 22.7 points going into the game. The 6-foot-11 centre attempted only two more shots the rest of the game and was 11 of 16 from the foul line. "The effort wasnt there," Cousins said. "It was just bad overall. I dont really have an answer, but whatever it is, it needs to be fixed. After the All-Star break, well start fresh, which is what we need right now." Tristan Thompson had 16 points and 13 points for the Cavaliers. Isaiah Thomas scored 16 points, and Rudy Gay added 14 for the Kings. Sacramento has dropped the first three games of a four-game trip that ends Wednesday against New York. The Kings are 6-19 on the road. C.J. Miles (sore right foot) also missed the game for Cleveland. NOTES: Asked to describe Varejaos injury, Brown said, "With Andy, its his back and really his whole body that is sore, so it will be good to get him some rest, but obviously, you hope that its not a long-term thing." ... Varejao wont travel to Detroit ... Malone spent five seasons as an assistant under Brown with the Cavaliers from 2005-10. ... Thomas and Kings F Jason Thompson each picked up two fouls in the first quarter. Thompson committed his third foul 34 seconds into the third quarter and was scoreless for the game. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Lee Westwood ended a two-year winless drought with a seven-shot victory at the Malaysian Open on Sunday. After a four-hour delay due to the threat of lightning in the middle of the final round, Westwood went on to shoot a 4-under par 68 to complete an 18-under 270 at the Kuala Lumpur Country Club course for his 36th career victory. Westwood led from start to finish in the co-sanctioned European and Asian Tour event that he also won in 1997. "Its a golf course that suits my game; its very tight in certain areas. I played well, I putted well, and the short game is good," Westwood said. South Africas Louis Oosthuizen (68), the 2012 champion, along with Belgiums Nicolas Colsaerts (70) and Austrias Bernd Wiesberger (67) shared a distant second place on 11 under. The win will not only improve Westwoods ranking but also help him improve on his current 20th place in the European Ryder Cup standings.dddddddddddd "I feel like Ive got a short game back and Im starting to roll a few putts in," he added. "It makes a helluva difference if you can get up-and-down if you miss a few greens as it keeps the momentum going." Westwood, who turns 41 next week, went into the final round leading by one having let slip a four-shot second round lead. But the 36th-ranked Englishman, and highest ranked player in the field, again found himself four clear after only two holes where nearest rival and playing partner Andy Sullivan triple-bogeyed the second hole after finding water with his tee shot. Westwoods drive to victory was then halted mid-afternoon when the threat of lightning stopped play and his lead at four through 11 holes. He returned to the course after a delay of four hours and 13 minutes to birdie the 13th for a six-shot lead. Westwood then underlined his class with a birdie on the last. , who led the Jets to the AFC chBOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox are still looking for a position for Brock Holt. The versatile rookie has made the search difficult by playing well wherever the club has put him. Holt made his first professional start in centre field and he appeared perfectly comfortable in his fifth position this season. He made a sensational diving catch to end the third inning and scored both Boston runs in the Red Soxs 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on Tuesday night. "It seems like Brock at some point in each game has an effect on whats going on," said Jon Lester, who weathered a shaky start and pitched six-plus strong innings. "Im sure well see him with catchers gear or on the mound at some point this year. The guys done an unbelievable job." Holt ended the third inning with a diving catch on a ball that left fielder Jonny Gomes lost in the twilight. Gomes signalled with his hands that he couldnt see it, but Holt was already on the move and lunged just in time to complete the catch. "Fortunately I was able to get over there and make a play," Holt said. Boston fans gave him a long ovation during his entire trot to the dugout, and teammates waited with high-fives and pats on the back on the way. Holt happened to be up next and led off with a double off the Green Monster, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox up 2-0. "He comes out of nowhere and makes a diving catch. In a way, he took over the inning," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He doesnt get hung up on moving to a position for the first time. He goes out and plays." Holt scored Bostons first run after he singled and then came in on an RBI double by Dustin Pedroia. Lester (8-7) needed 33 pitches to get out of the first inning on a hot, muggy night, then settled down and took a shutout into the sixth. He left with one out in the seventh after striking out six and holding the Twins to one run, four hits and a walk. Edward Mujica pitched the ninth and earned his second save. Phil Hughes (7-3) took the loss for the Twins, who have dropped four straight. The Red Sox have held Minnesota to one run and seven hits in the first two games of the series. Hughes gave up two runs and eight hits in eight innings and struck out six. "He did all he could do. He gave us a great opportunity to win. We just couldnt come up with enough big hits," manager Ron Gardenhire said. After Danny Santana opened the game with a single,, Lester retired 13 of the next 14 batters and didnt allow another hit until Kurt Suzuki singled with one out in the fifth. Minnesota cut it to 2-1 in the sixth when Santana led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt by Brian Dozier, and scored on Joe Mauers double. "We need to knock in some runs," Gardenhire said. "We need more of them." Pedroia nearly broke open the game on a fly ball to left that was inches short of a two-run homer. Instead, it was a single, and Pedroia was caught in a rundown. The play was reviewed for several minutes, and the call on the field stood. NOTES: Holt played centre field on Tuesday and has made starts in all three outfield positions, as well as first and third base. ... Lester struck out Eduardo Escobar in the fifth inning for his 1,342nd career strikeout, passing Cy Young for fourth place on Bostons career strikeout list. ... Lester threw nearly one-third of his 109 pitches in the first inning. ... Before the game, the Red Sox designated outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment. Sizemore returned from injuries that sidelined him between September 2011 and this season. He hit .333 in spring training, but struggled lately. His play was the bright spot in a drab 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. "When called upon youve got to be there for them," said Anderson, who earned his ninth win of the season. "(Thursday) was one of those nights where everything kind of went my way. I got the bounces. We did the little things that pay off and end up winning you the game as opposed to looking good on the scoresheet." Like the Senators, Anderson has had his share of struggles this season, but has looked better as of late. "Our goaltender obviously made a conscious decision that he was going to be competitive and gave us a chance to win," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. MacLean has been looking for a more consistent effort from his team and with points in their last four games the Senators are finally showing signs of it. "Weve had a good week, but we cant be satisfied with that," said Anderson. "This week means nothing if we dont continue with the progress for the next game." Bobby Ryan and Zack Smith scored for the Senators (13-14-6), who will look to extend their point streak Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings. Tyler Ennis scored the lone goal for the Sabres (7-23-2). Ryan Miller faced 32 shots. This was the second of back-to-back games between the two teams with the Sabres winning Tuesday 2-1 in a shootout. Anderson was solid in the third with the Senators holding a 2-1 lead. He made a big save on Mark Pysyk early in the period and another on Drew Stafford late in the period to preserve the lead. He was called upon yet again in the final two minutes as Milan Michalek took a holding penalty. "I think Anderson played well," said Ennis. "Scoring goals is hard." These two teams have a history of playing a less than exciting style of hockey against one another, which could be the reason for the second smallest crowd of the season with just 15,578 on hand. Smith realized that Thursdays game may not have been the most exciting from a fans standpoint, but hoped that the win more than makes up for it. "Weve struggled to put wins together so when you get four games andd points in all of them its pretty huge," said Smith.dddddddddddd "Its good to get going and get the confidence up." The second period was a struggle for both teams. Ottawa continued to have trouble in their own end, but were fortunate as the Buffalo offence had its own problems. Anderson was also able to make up for any glaring mistakes. Smiths second-period goal at the six-minute mark held up as the winner. Kyle Turris made a nice pass and Smith was the benefactor as the puck bounced off a skate to his stick and he swept it past Miller. Ottawa nearly gave up the first goal -- yet again -- but caught a break when John Scott was called for goaltender interference early in the game. The Senators managed to make the most of the opportunity and scored first as Ryan picked up his 15th of the season midway through the period. Turris made a cross-ice pass to Ryan, who was left all alone in front. Sabres head coach Ted Nolan admitted both goals were just a matter of players breaking down for a couple of seconds. "If you dont turn for one split second its in the net, and thats what happened." The Sabres made it 1-1 on a power-play wraparound goal by Ennis late in the first. "They gave me a lot of time to walk it and take it in front," said Ennis. "I just tried to throw it in and I got a good bounce." It was a special night for Ottawa native Cody Ceci, who was an emergency recall, and made his NHL debut Thursday. Ceci ended up plus-2, played 20:40 and was on the ice in the final minutes as the Senators killed a penalty. "It was definitely a special experience," said Ceci. "Its always nice when the coach shows confidence in you and puts you out in the last minute. For him to pick me was pretty special so I tried to make the most of it and do my best not to let them score." Notes: D Joe Corvo played in his 700th NHL game and D Jared Cowen sat out the first of his two-game suspension. The Senators also recalled C Jean-Gabriel Pageau. D Marc Methot was out with the flu and LW Matt Kassian was a healthy scratch for the Senators. a The Sabres were without top-scoring C Cody Hodgson, who has an undisclosed injury. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Nelson Cruz has only two hits in 15 at-bats against the Kansas City Royals this season. Both are home runs. Cruz hit a two-run homer and the first-place Baltimore Orioles beat the Royals 2-1 on Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Cruz homered in the fourth after Chris Davis drew a walk to lead off the inning. It was Cruzs 12th home run, which is second in the American League to the 15 of Chicago White Sox rookie Jose Abreu. Cruzs 35 RBIs are tied for second in the AL. "Hes one of the best power hitters in the American League over the past five or six years," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Hes hit in a good hitters park in Texas, but hes got power to all fields." Wei-Yin Chen (5-2) limited the Royals to one run and seven hits over 5 1-3 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Chen, who is 5-1 in his past seven starts, was removed in the sixth after Salvador Perez walked and Alex Gordon singled with one out. Darren ODay replaced Chen and struck out Danny Valencia and retried Johnny Giavotella on a fly to right. Royals rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura (2-3) struck out nine and walked one in 6 1-3 innings, allowing two runs and seven hits. After Cruzs home run, Ventura retired the next 10 batters, striking out seven, including six straight at one stretch. "He made a mistake to Nelson Cruz and it wasnt even a mistake," Yost said. "I think he threw a good fastball to Nelson. It was up and over the middle of the plate and he ambushed it." Cruz hit the first pitch out to right-centre from Ventura, who has a fastball that routinely hits triple digits on radar guns. "We know hes got a great fastball," Cruz said. "He can get you quick. Hes got great stuff. It was one of those at-bats that I got what I was looking for. We were trying to be aggressive and he was throwing a lot of first-pitch fastballs. I was looking for a fastball." With a northwest wind blowing 15 mph and gusting up to 28, it was less than ideal conditions to hit a home run. "You could have made some money off me if youd have bet me that somebody could have gotten a ball out of here tonight," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Valencias sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fourth scored Eric Hosmer for the only run off Chen. "Ventura pitched great," Giavotella said. "We just couldnt back him up with any runs." Left-hander Zach Britton, who had not allowed a run in 7 1-3 innings in his past eight appearances, worked a perfect ninth for his first major league save. Showalter elected to go to Britton after closer Tommy Hunter blew his past two save chances. "Guys graduate," Showalter said. "It was a good start and its good to know that if we need him for a given night hell be ready. Well see how it goes from here." The Royals did not have a baserunner off four Baltimore relievers, who retired 11 straight. "Our pitchers did a really good job and we really needed this win," Cruz said. "Anytime you can win a game by one run its huge. We feel like we can get something going." The Orioles, who went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position, threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but came away empty. Gordon, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, threw out J.J. Hardy at the plate to end the seventh for his fourth outfield assist this season and his 58th since moving to the outfield in 2011. Hardy attempted to score from second on Nick Markakis single. Manny Machado and Adam Jones led off the Orioles eighth with singles off Louis Coleman, the third Kansas City pitcher. Kelvin Herrera replaced Coleman and struck out Davis and Cruz and retired Steve Clevenger on a grounder to strand the runners. Thats my job — to make sure that we cover every base.Arians insisted that starting Thomas no way would be a reflection in the way that Ryan played, only the chance for Logan to show that he can do something.Lindley completed 18 of 44 passes for 216 yards with one interception in Arizonas 35-6 loss to Seattle on Sunday night.Thomas would be the fourth quarterback to start for the Cardinals this season, third in the last three games.Sundays game at San Francisco has playoff implications. If the Cardinals win and Seattle loses at home to St. Louis, Arizona would win the NFC West and possibly the conferences No. 1 seed.Either a Cardinals loss or Seahawks win would relegate Arizona to a wild-card spot and a first-round game on the road, most likely as the No. 5 seed.Arians said he has very, very high optimism that Drew Stanton will be ready for the playoffs because he wants to be ready.Had he not had that minor setback last week, he would have probably tried to play in that one (against Seattle), Arians said. Theres no way Ill play him this week unless I have to.Stanton, who took over when Carson Palmer went down with a season-ending knee injury, sprained his right knee in Arizonas 12-6 win at St. Louis on Dec. 11. He practiced on a limited basis last Thursday, but experienced some swelling in the knee.We dont want to have another setback, Arians said. Hell work into practice some this week and get some action in practice.Arians said he didnt think nerves got to Lindley.I thought he was very calm, the coach said. He was handling his protections extrremely well.dddddddddddd It was just a matter of finding the open guy and being accurate.Thomas, a fourth-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, is a mobile 6-foot-6 quarterback with a cannon arm. Accuracy and decision making are his issues, and the Cardinals had wanted to have him watch from the sidelines all season as the third-string quarterback behind Palmer and Stanton. But when Stanton took over for Palmer after a shoulder injury, then went down with a concussion at Denver, Thomas was forced into action. He completed an 81-yard touchdown pass to Andre Ellington, but his other seven throws fell incomplete. Two days after Palmers season-ending injury, the Cardinals signed Lindley off the San Diego practice squad. Lindley had been Arizonas No. 3 quarterback last season and was in training camp this year before losing the No. 3 job to Thomas. With Stanton out, Arians turned to Lindley, not Thomas, in the crucial game against Seattle, choosing not to send the rookie against the NFLs No. 1 defence. Now Thomas will get his first career start — unless he performs poorly in practice. Then Arians said he could make a change. And when the game begins, Arians vowed to keep the hook handy and replace Thomas with Lindley.Quarterback play was only one of the things that went haywire Sunday night. The running game never gained traction and had to be abandoned when the team fell so far behind. Kerwynn Williams, after gaining 175 yards in 25 carries the previous two games, carried two times for 4 yards. And that defence that prides itself as one of the NFLs best was shredded and overpowered, through the air and on the ground. The 596 yards allowed matched the second most in franchise history. Only the 1958 Chicago Cardinals gave up more, 683 against Pittsburgh. It was Arizonas third loss in five games after a 9-1 start.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Denver Nuggets Jerseys Cheap Minnesota Timberwolves Jerseys Cheap Oklahoma City Thunder Jerseys Cheap Portland Trail Blazers Jerseys Cheap Utah Jazz Jerseys Cheap Los Angeles Clippers Jerseys Cheap Los Angeles Lakers Jerseys Cheap Phoenix Suns Jerseys Cheap Sacramento Kings Jerseys Cheap Dallas Mavericks Jerseys Cheap Houston Rockets Jerseys Cheap Memphis Grizzlies Jerseys Cheap New Orleans Pelicans Jerseys Cheap San Antonio Spurs Jerseys Cheap Golden State Warriors Jerseys ' ' '

MONTREAL -- The Hamilton Bulldogs couldnt recover from two goals in quick succession. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Buddy Robinson scored 43 seconds apart in the second period to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs in American Hockey League action Friday night at the Bell Centre. The goals came off defensive lapses - missed coverage, and a mistake by goaltender Dustin Tokarski. Pageau was left alone in the slot for the equalizer, and Robinson benefited from Tokarskis lax play for the winner. "Those were two gifts. We gave them those goals," said Bulldogs coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "Those were glaring mistakes." With Hamilton leading 1-0 in the second period, the Senators tied the game at 15:00 when Pageau beat Tokarski above the glove into a gaping top corner. Pageau was left unmarked just outside the crease following a defensive breakdown, and could make no mistake from such close range. Robinson put Binghamton ahead less than a minute later, slotting home his ninth of the year past a sprawling Bulldogs goaltender. After an initial shot from the point, Tokarksi tried to smother the puck with his glove, but Senators forward Derek Grant got to it before him. Grant poked it out to a wide-open Robinson. "Its tough to come back from that," said Lefebvre. "Those really hurt your confidence. And were in a tough stretch right now, so confidence isnt coming easy to us. Sometimes we get discouraged too easily." The Bulldogs (22-24-5) found no way back after the abrupt turnaround. Instead, they were kept at bay by Binghamton (33-15-4) netminder Andrew Hammond, who was in fine form. Hammond made 31 saves, including 10 in the third period, for his 17th win of the season. Hamilton is slumping of late. Theyve gone 2-7-1 in their last 10 games, and have only scored four times in their last three. "Thats the story of our season so far," said forward Gabriel Dumont, who was kept off the score sheet for the fourth straight game. "Were trying to keep it simple and drive to the net, put pucks on the net, but were having trouble finding the back of the net." Dumont, whos played two games with the Montreal Canadiens this season, has been a Bulldog for the last four years. His struggling team has fallen to 13th in the Western Conference, and is eight points out of a playoff spot. "Its a frustrating season with some highs, and a lot of lows," he added. "Were still looking for consistency. Tonight, we were only able to score one goal." The goal was Nick Tarnaskys, and it opened the scoring at 4:18 of the second period. The six-foot-two Bulldogs forward used defenceman Mike Sdao as a screen to fool Hammond with a shot between the legs. "I got a lucky bounce at the blue-line," said Tarnasky, who was on a partial breakaway when he entered the Binghamton zone. "I heard somebody yelling: Youre on a two-on-one. But I wasnt. I was going to pass, but there was nobody there. "It was lucky enough that (Sdao) was coming across at the same time as I shot it. I dont think the goaltender was able to see it. That play gave us a little lift at the time." But it was all Binghamton after their two quick strikes later in the frame. PHILADELPHIA - Despite his diminutive size, Jimmy Rollins always believed he could hit a baseball. Turns out hes been good enough to amass more hits in a Phillies uniform than any other player. Rollins singled in the fifth to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt to become the Phillies hits leader and Domonic Brown capped the inning with a three-run homer, leading Philadelphia to a 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Rollins got hit No. 2,235 off Edwin Jackson, sending a 3-1 pitch into right field to open the fifth. The game was then delayed for an on-field celebration. "It was very cool," said Rollins. The 5-foot-8 shortstop never let his stature deter him. "Thats something my mom and dad taught me when Im young," he said. "(Im) probably not going to be biggest guy, but that doesnt mean you have to be weak, doesnt mean you dont have confidence. And then size isnt really going to matter. Ive always had that belief in myself and without it I wouldnt have been here." Chase Utley also homered for Philadelphia, which has won four of five following a dismal 1-8 stretch. David Buchanan (2-3), in his fifth start for injured lefty Cliff Lee (elbow), allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. But the day belonged to Rollins. He made his debut with the Phillies on Sept. 17, 2000, and has played his entire career in Philadelphia. "To be the all-time hits leader, that speaks for itself," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It was well worth it. Fourteen years of effort with one uniform in a lot of ways thats old school." Said Cubs manager Rick Renteria: "Hes put together what is potentially a Hall of Fame career. Hes a credit to Philadelphia and the Phillies. I think hes admired all over." Schmidt, a Phillies TV analyst for Sunday games, retrieved Rollins bat and greeted the 2007 NL MVP with a high-five and hug at first base. The entire Phillies team then came out from the dugout to offer congratulatory hugs and handshakes. After the Phillies left the field, Schmidt took Rollins hand and held it in the air. Fans cheered and gave the duo a standing ovation as fireworks erupted from the large video board in left field. "I told him, Congrats, it couldnt happen to a better guy," Schmidt said later in the game. "Im glad I was here. My heart is pounding." Schmidt had doubts that any player would break his hits record in notoriously tough Philadelphia and in the era of free agency. But Rollins mentality on and off the field, Schmidt says, allowed him to do it. "Hes very comfortable in his own skin," Schmidt said. "Hes got a nice, short stride and stays relaxed (at the plate). Hes a great clutch hitter, tremendous . much better than me. One of the great compliments you can pay a hitter is (to) say I want him up when the game is on the line." Schmidt said Rollins should get "definite consideration" for the Hall of Fame right now and believes Rollins could land in Cooperstown with continued solid play for three or four more years. "He knows talent, thats pretty cool," Rollins said. Schmidt also knows hitting. Upon leaving the field, Schmidt was stopped in the dugout by the slumping Brown, who asked for a hitting lesson. Schmidt said he told Brown to drive through the ball with his left hand. Minutes later, Brown broke the game open with a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the season after hitting 27 last year, that put Philadelphia ahead 7-3 and chased Jackson (4-7). Rollins received strong ovations when he came to the plate his first two at-bats, but he grounded out to first base in the first inning and lined out sharply to first in the second. He finished 1 for 4. Justin Ruggiano, Luis Valbuena and Mike Olt homered for Chicago. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances. Jackson allowed seven runs — six earned — on eight hits in 4 2-3 innings. Utley put Philadelphia in front with a solo shot in the first, but Olt answered in the second. It was the 10th homer in 22 hits for the Cubs rookie. Ben Revere and Carlos Ruiz had RBI hits, along with Junior Lakes fielding error in centre field, in the bottom of the second helped Philadelphia take a 4-1 lead. NOTES: The Cubs lost an eighth-inning challenge when replays upheld first base umpire Kerwin Danleys decision that Nate Schierholtz was out at first base. The delay was 2 minutes, 17 seconds. .
